I have an inbox but my people rarely use it. Instead, they leave work on my chair.

I do NOT like for people to leave work on my chair. Something about coming back from a meeting or lunch and seeing work on my chair is irritating. I do look in my inbox and take work out of it, and it's never full, so I'm not sure why they feel the need to use my chair...do your people use your inbox?

While my co-workers do use my in-box, my bosses don't.  They just put things willy-nilly on my desk.  Since my desk is usually fairly tidy, that's ok. I do have one boss who insists on sticking things right under my nose.  Even if I'm working on something, he will put it right on top of the papers I am using!  Now, that makes me growl under my breath.  But he's a dear generally - I've been working for him for many years and love him to pieces, so I just keep it to myself.  Besides, he's bound to be retiring one of these days!

Mine is on the corner of my desk and I even invested in a nice wooden one that is a good 4" deep because I get a lot of invoices and tickets that pile up fast.  But low and behold, even if the thing is empty, I come in and folks have left stuff on my calculator, my keyboard, or elsewhere on my desk.

Our receptionist will even bring things in when I'm here and lay them across the edge of my inbox.  Now that drives me nuts.  I see her bringing it in, its safe to put it in the box, you know?  And even if there are things in there I'm waiting on info to finish, I go through the papers 2-3 times a day to pull those folder and things so I'm going to see what's in there at least once during the day and will take care of it if its a priority.

But we all have different styles and quirks so I just deal with it and move the papers into my box until I'm ready to handle them.

I gave up using an IN box, as no one ever uses it.

I suggest that when you leave your office (or cubicle) that you place your inbox on your chair.  Perhaps that might send a message, but I doubt it.  Worth a try.

Don't have an inbox - most of my work is generated via email or online tools - very little need for paperwork.

Even other admins in my office refuse to use my inbox. It used to drive me nuts. I guess now I've just accepted it as a fact of life.

I have one but people don't use mine either.  It's either set on my desk somewhere or on my chair.  Guess I've gotten used to that too.  Maybe we should get rid of our in boxes, since no one seems to use them.  Then they would ask where is it when it's gone.  Can't win!

Sorry for so short a response before... just popped in and got handed another supsense, so just left it at that.

I've found that in my position, and in fact, in my company, most of the in-boxes are used only for routine mail from outside sources and that anything that is internal is placed on your desk or your chair, or directly in your hands.  I think it's a culture thing, that this company has decided that what they perceive as unimportant mail goes in your in-box, and anything of importance would never be handled if it was also placed there, so it must be put where it will get your immediate attention.  The favorite here, if you're not at your desk, is in your chair, as you can't fail to see it when you return.  The proble?  I've had 3-4 "priority" items left in my chair, and while working on a higher priority item, I didn't flip through all the pages as they appeared all 1 item... Only later did I discover that there were several different ones.  If they had each placed them (with a gem clip or in a folder, complete with routing slip --as we are supposed to do) in my in-box, then I would have known there were several and addressed each of them (or communicated my prior priority to them to ensure that someone else is lined up to take care of theirs).  After 2 years, I gave up the fight and did away with my in-box and now have just accepted the fact that if I'm out for any reason (be it 5 minutes or 5 days) anything for me will be left in my chair.  But at least I did finally get them to understand the importance of putting a routing slip on it, so that I can have some instructions from the sender and delineate between jobs.

I would love to have an in-box again, but knowing that this entire company runs without one really, I can't expect to ever get one back.  Not sure if I'll know what to do with one if I get out of this company.
