I was delighted to see a new feature in my new OS Magazine entitled 'Desktop Dilemmas' - by none other than Andrea McKinney!
Great to see a 'familiar face' in one of my favourite mags!

Aww. Thanks Nic. I enjoy writing the column very much and look forward to getting some interesting questions for future issues. Of course, you all at DeskDemon have me so well trained at giving responses that are from the heart that I have an issue with having to limit my replies to a certain word count. I am driving my editor insane  . After all any of you who've ever been the recipient of my DeskDemon advice know very well that being concise is not one of my virtues.... Andrea |

I'm looking forward to your advice in the next edition and it's great that you've been given the opportunity to do this - well deserved! I really enjoy that magazine actually and get some good ideas from it.
This time, there is an article from a lady that works for Woolworths. She has this 'brought forward file' where she puts all the stuff for her boss in a 1-31 filing drawer, relative to the day of month which relates to what she is doing that day. I'm hoping to implement something like that very soon. It was also interesting that her boss said that now she has a PA who can do Shorthand, she never wants one that can't! Better get my Teeline book out again!

I know this is a bit off topic but could somebody please tell me where I can subscribe to OS magazine? I've tried searching online and have tried to get DD to put me in touch with somebody but to no avail.

Andrea, Just back to work after day off on Fri - will read your article later. Well done! Is this a regular feature?
Nicola - as for your note above on the diary thingy - I used this years ago in my first temp job with a well known bank in Northern Ireland - also used it when I moved to England - works well if you have a lot of paperwork!

Hey Andrea that's excellent but what is OS Magazine?
I used to have a day-to-day file and it worked for my previous boss but for the work I do for this one it really isn't applicable. However I have implemented a Reading & Travel folder which I give to him when he is travelling during the week with his tickets/maps/directions/agendas and also anything he needs to read and approve that can wait a day or two or anything he's asked for research on or to be printed to read etc.
I then have a daily work book which is basically a plastic book with dividers and each is labelled i.e. mail, for immediate approval, print-outs etc and I can hand him that each day. He prefers for me to just give him each item individually so usually I take the book into his office in the morning and afternoon and go through it with him and take it away with me. He doesn't like things left on his desk because he'll ignore and lose them.
I've digressed again.

Uberpa - OS is Office Secretary Magazine, and is one of several of the professional secretarial magazines around. It is probably the longest standing, now owned by Peebles Publishing in Glasgow if you want to search for it. If you use the 'search' facility in DD you should find a link or contacts for it as there were some questions about it before. Jackie www.iqps.org

A few months ago, I filled out the form for a subscription to OS, but haven't heard or received anything. Is this strictly a UK publication? Any chance it will be sent to the US if requested?

Joyce Yes it is a UK publication and I would suspect that most of the articles and certainly the advertising in the magazine are purely aimed at the UK audience, and so wouldn't be of much use. I am surprised though, that they haven't contacted you to suggest that OS is perhaps not for you as you're in the States...!!! Hi G and uberpa
I've started my 'diary' drawer today. My boss has lots of meetings with tour operators, so I have started by putting a copy of their most recent brochure in under the appropriate day so that he can familiarise himself with the product again briefly before their meeting. Also, next Friday he has interviews to conduct in one of our branches, so in go the relevant CV's under that day.
I think this going to prove to be very productive for us!
