When You See 25M You Know It's:

a. 25,000,000
b. 250,000
c. 25,000
d. Is that how much you won playing the lotto?

p.s. I guess I couldn't do a poll cuz I'm not special.....

My guess would be "A" also.

I would love to hear that it was D though.

My first thought was A too.  And NO I wouldn't mind winning that in the lotto; in fact I wouldn't mind winning anything in lotto.  I started playing this year and still haven't won a nickle.

I agree with everyone... It's A, but I wouldn't mind it being D also.

I agree - it's A.

But just like everyone else - I'd like it to be D.

Well I was really hoping that someone knew!!  Actually 25M is 25,000.  25MM is Million.  I wish I won the lotto, and I would have been happy with either amount Smiley

I thought 25K was 25,000 since K signifies thousands.  Just goes to show that I can be fooled and misled easily.

I thought 25M was 25,000,000 or 25 million... and that 25MM would be 25million million, or some abstract, huge number that I would hate to try to put the correct 0's to.

According to my boss, who has worked in finance for way too many years by his account, $25M would be $25,000 and $25MM would be $25,000,000 (either of which would make wonderful lottery winnings!)

He thinks it has something to do with the Roman numerals, as M would be 1000.  Therefore MM would be M times M, which would be 1,000 times 1,000, which equals a million.

So what is 25K?  You always here of folks saying that something costs xx-thousands, or xxK, so where did this develop from?  Inquiring minds would like to learn right..

When I read Bridget's question, the first thought I had was Hmmm... could this be a trick question?  Anyway...it seems that it was!  I remember about a year ago talking with our accountants here at work about using K and M.  (Their acocunting reports specifically use K for "thousand" and M for "million") -- K and M are completely different languages, so to speak... "Kilo" is thousand for metric and M is thousand for Roman Numeral.  Anyway, I just did a search and found some interesting information about the use of K and M with regards to accounting and numbers.  From what the professor in the article states, (in the attached link), the use of M is confusing and shouldn't be used for "thousand" in accounting any longer ...(apparently it's the old school way of writing it, but no longer used because of confusion between the more popular and widely used metric system)  (see link below for details)

So... I guess we were wrong (Roman numeral-wise)...but we were also correct (with new way of using the M symbol for million), too!!  [smile}
