This storage consultant pilot fish is helping to install a pair of very large,
very expensive storage arrays -- one for migrating legacy data, and the other
for disaster recovery.
"This company was short on power and space in their data center and were not
willing to pay for a disaster recovery site, so both storage arrays were crammed
together in the same room along with other racks of servers," grumbles fish.
Not only is everything shoehorned into a 10-ft.-wide space, but the inadequate
electrical wiring requires both storage arrays to be run off the same power
distribution unit (PDU) -- and they're running with no protection against power
surges.
So when a hardware tech arrives to install SCSI cards in one of the servers,
fish gets a little nervous.
"It's the top server in the rack, and it weighs a lot," says fish. "So there are
feet attached to the bottom of the rack, to be extended whenever the server
needs to be slid on its rails outside the frame.
"The hardware tech wasn't extending the feet, and when I mentioned this to him,
he replied that those are only needed for earthquake protection."
And with that, the tech pushes the server on its rails outside the rack's frame.
Which promptly causes the rack to tip forward.
But it can't fall far in the cramped server room before it smashes into another
rack -- one containing a PDU.
"This caused some sparks to fly, and everything connected to that PDU
immediately shut down," says fish. "The surge killed the storage arrays, which
were both attached to the same PDU."
And who exactly is this electrically challenged outfit that now owns two dead
multimillion-dollar storage arrays?
Says fish, "It's the power company."

I love shark tank! I never knew it existed before you posted in this forum.

I have some stories I quite fancy submitting. The boss asked me to find him  a document. What was the file name, I asked. He didn't know. Well, what was the document type? He doesn't know. What was in the document, I ask. If I knew that, he said, I wouldn't need you to find it.

We have an admin that does the exact same thing. "Can you help me find a document? I don't remember where I put it." "Sure, what's the name?" "Name?" "What did you name the document?" "I don't know but can you help me find it?"
