Saw a position open up on my organization's website that I think I'd be perfect for! After much introspection, I just don't think I'm particularly suited for the department I'm in currently. The people are lovely, Boss is good, but this just isn't my "thing" if that makes any sense. It's been, well, years since there's been anything posted that I think would work for me, so tonight I'm logging on and submitting my application and resume.
Wish me luck!

Well, when I went online that night, but posting was gone! In my organization, that means it was filled, probably a week ago. Oh, well. I did see another possibility that also looks interesting and would be a step up, so I got that in pronto. I've also reactivated my profile on Monster and updated my LinkedIn account and have the word out to some former coworkers that I'm "exploring opportunities". It's funny -- once I've sort of made up my mind to start looking, I'm feeling calmer at work. As if knowing I've "given myself permission" to look elsewhere, I'm not feeling quite as trapped, even though there's no guarantee for anything.

I think that makes total sense. It's very liberating knowing you are "on the way out". You can be much more zenlike about problems and stresses, since you only have to put up with it a short time longer (hopefully). Good luck finding something!

How can an internal job be filled before -
- being advertised? - applications are received? - candidates are shortlisted? - invited to interview? - the job is offered?
Totally bizarre!

A company can fill a position legally without ever advertising or interviewing and fill it with the boss's offspring. I recently inquired about becoming a floor caption where I volunteer usher and was told they don't accept applications but approach a volunteer when they see the need. I asked one of our employment attorneys if this was legal. Oh yes he says, they can hire whoever they want without advertising or posting a position. As long as they don't discriminate on race religion etc... Synopsis: just because companies have hiring practices doesn't follow that this is federal or state law.

An internal position has to be trawled otherwise it is discrimination to appoint one person when others should be allowed the opportunity.
That wouldn't happen in my company.

Aside from any legalities -- our website is not always the most up to date. It may have been posted there for quite some time before I happened to see it when I decided to start looking. I work for a public institution -- and they're very careful about possible discrimination suits when it comes to employment. I have no doubt all the steps Gee listed were abided by -- they just didn't take the posting off the web fast enough.

But there must have been a closing date. I too have worked in the public sector, so I know how it works.

In an organisation I worked for jobs were advertised on the internal board but it was well known that ones with a short (usually 7 days) closing deadline were already allocated to someone but they had to go down the advertising route to ensure they were 'seen' to be giving everybody an equal chance.
I agree with the fact that once you have decided to do something such as look for another job, if you are unhappy in the one you are in, you do feel calmer and even stronger which can only be a good thing as it makes you more positive that you will get what you want in the end.

Well, nothing yet. Have put in for some other positions as well. I'm looking for a step up in salary and title. I don't see any point in making a lateral move in the organization at this time. It's been a bad six months, but I'm starting to see a little light on the horizon. Funny how that works, isn't it?

Have an interview tomorrow!! And the crazy thing is that this is for the one position that I thought was the long shot. Not to mention the one with the biggest increase in title/salary...
Fingers crossed!
