Has anyone actually ever received a "bonus" such as a Christmas bonus that wasn't tided in to formal pay?   I was watching a movie and they received a bonus.   I have worked for 6 companies in my career and have never been given a bonus. not even a gift certificate for a holiday turkey!  Have you?

Jennika,

For me personally I have received gifts at Christmas but not a bonus - mostly wine, vouchers, chocolates etc.  In previous years, I was lucky if I got a pay rise.

Currently the engineering staff get bonuses although I don't think this is necessarily paid out at Christmas.  This is tied in to their annual review/appraisal/objectives.  Admin staff in my opinion never seem to warrant a bonus, which has been the same anywhere else I have worked.  I wish someone could tell me why.

I do think it's quite poor that we are not recognised in the same way as other employees.  Bonuses should be distributed across the board in my opinion.

Yes I have received bonus in the past and gift in past and present jobs. Guess I have been very lucky. Smiley

Most companies I have worked for have given bonuses.  The executive recruiter I worked for actually gave me a four figure bonus (but that included my 401k match which I thought was odd).  You could have knocked me over with a feather when I opened that check.  Most large US companies have fixed bonuses based on performance and a percentage of your annual salary.   I ask questions about bonuses in final neogiations before accepting a new position.

I have definitely received bonuses at Christmas. At one company I did get a holiday turkey Smiley. However I have gotten monetary bonuses from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars previously... Nothing like that here... darn it. Sad

However, hubby told me this week, that it appears his current company gives Christmas bonuses.

So it is definitely out there in some companies!

I've had them in the past from previous and my current employer before they were bought out.  They've come at Xmas and ranged from 1 month - 1 week's salary.  One year (back in the bouyant days!) I managed to recarpet the downstairs of a previous house house with what I got from the Xmas bonus - carpet was purchased in the January sales though.  Roll Eyes  I've also received bonuses at other times of the year when sales have been extra good and then everyone has been rewarded financially

This year we've been told no more Xmas bonus as new owners aren't doing it.  Sad  Still I'm grateful to be working in these difficult times.

Hubby received Xmas bonus and certificates for hams and turkeys.  I have received gifts from  my boss like nice ornaments, etc., but never gift certificates.

Wow, I was expecting not many, if any at all!  This surprises me.   I guess I have picked the wrong companies!  (I do get Christmas gifts but they are on a personal not "corporate" basis.

You and me both Jennika - I have never had a formal company bonus where I have worked, but have usually received personal gifts at Christmas and Birthdays from bosses.

I wonder if it makes a difference for US versus UK?

Also, certain types of companies are far less likely to offer bonuses. For example, those with a high percentage of union workers may have problems with it, government, etc.

I think regardless of US v UK, it does depend on the kind of industry sector we work in.  The private sector for example is more likely to pay out bonuses than the public sector.  I have worked in both industries and both are very different.

Also if you work in the kind of company where you are selling a product, meeting milestones and delivering projects, bonuses will be offered as an incentive.

That's why I feel admins are ignored when it comes to this sort of thing.  I personally don't have targets, I don't work on a production line and I don't deliver any kind of project.  However, I do other tasks to support my boss and his department which should still warrant a bonus even if it's a lesser percentage than some other employees.

We have a very strong union here and they seem to be the driving force behind some of these perks.

I think all but one of the companies I’ve worked for has given a bonus of one kind or another.  Even where I am now does, which is tied into the ad hoc conference business we do during the summer.

I’ve also received in the past – and here now – “merit increases”, not performance-related.  Unfortunately where I am now only gives them every other year.  But hey!  Grin Not complaining – good to get anything above & beyond the regular increases.
