Our company empoyed a new, slightly older person to help with admin, with very limited experience of PCs 6 months ago, and she has turned out to be a star ( I know this is not always the case and it can be a gamble).
Just about everything I have learnt myself MS-wise has been through word of mouth, and asking someone if unsure. I am very lucky as my boss is a gadget freak and loves sharing his knowledge! Last month I borrowed some training CDs from work, and these helped me.
If only more people with less experience were given a chance and they too will then later on remember the first ime they weren't sure which buton to press to turn the machine off!

Another aspect of office technology is when software features are used infrequently, as in my work environment. It can be months before a certain thing needs to be done but when the need arises, it's almost always a time crunch. That's when I usually when I have to hurry and assist or walk someone through something, like mail merge or spreadsheet formulas, charting, etc. So if it's a technique that isn't used every day and there's familiarity, it can be scary to the user I guess.
