I would start by asking my boss how they feel about drop-ins. Are they ok during certain hours? Does he want me to block out certain hours? I usually ask before letting someone come in (depending on the boss) - "bossie, so and so would like a few minutes with you. Are you available now or would you like me to schedule them later?" Do they want to allow drop ins but limit the time (with me coming in after 10 minutes and saying, I'm sorry bossie, but you have "xyz" and need to get started on it..." (to essentially rescue him).
