During my last performance review, I likened my job to being the stage manager for a Broadway show -- not in the spotlight myself, but there to support the performers on the stage. (Even if sometimes they change the show and don't tell me!)
In that role, I like having the autonomy to look ahead and see small problems on the horizon and just quietly take care of them before they become large problems in the here and now.
Personally, I get a lot of satisfaction even if nobody else notices. My boss said at my review, "I probably don't know 80% of what you do around here, but I know that if you're involved in something, it will be taken care of and I don't have to worry about it."
Now THAT'S a compliment!
