Can you talk to the person who entrusted you with the news in the first place?

After all if cutting from 6 to 2 is going to be made easier by having 2 who WANT to leave, isn't that a good thing?  (in terms of, it is a tough job at the best of times, but at this time of year to make people redundant and out of a job is worse news!)
