It is not always enough to be paid what you are worth. I am about to take a pay cut in order to leave a horrible job in the private sector, to go back to my previous job in a non-profit organization. I AM going to get a hefty pay raise from what I was making when I left the old job a few months ago, but it is a bit less than what I am making right now.
I never dreamed I'd be so happy to take a pay cut! I am also getting a title improvement that will more accurately reflect my responsibilities, but the job will be more or less the same one that I left.
I'll tell the story more fully elsewhere, but for me, right now, it is enough to be paid as much as they can afford, to do something I love, rather than to be paid what I am worth, while being miserable.

I have also taken a paycut to be in the permanant job I am in now - and its wonderful, I love it, have a great boss and I haven't been this happy in years. I am even happier now compared to when I was self employed!!!
I will have been here a year in June so hopefully some sort of a payrise will be coming in my direction, time will tell!

I am the union rep for all my colleagues and it is up to me to negotiate annual pay increases. I would be in deep trouble if I didn't negotiate something that everyone was pleased with - no-one would talk to me! I keep an eye (sometimes both eyes) on job advertisements and what salaries are being offered. I'm fairly confident that my salary is competitive, as are the salaries of my colleagues. As union rep, I have access to salary surveys and can contact my fellow union reps in other organisations for information. My employer is very good, on the whole, and I think it is important to look at the whole package - job security, prospects, holidays, pension, sick leave allowance, family-friendly policies, working environment etc - when assessing "pay". I also encourage my members to take on extra responsibilities or develop their posts in some way, perhaps by learning new skills, to give "added value" to the post and thus make a case for extra remuneration. Unique, Office Team released an Admin Staff Salary and Workplace Survey 2003/04 and Gordon Yates/The Guardian have also done an Admin, Secretarial & Support Staff Survey 2003/04.
I've got copies of both if you'd like to PM me but you can also probably obtain them via their websites.

Just thought I would let you all know, I am sat at home grinning from ear to ear, having a glass of wine to celebrate.
I did not have to ask, I did not have to wait till June ................... today I have had a payrise and I am absolutely over the moon.
