When you know something and your dying to tell someone but your unable too because you promised not to.  I've been keeping my lips sealed now for two weeks and I really need to tell someone else.  I've tried telling people out side work and it didn't help!  the situation is that we have had a restructure and our It manager has been sidelined and we have a new interim it Director.  This chap  is going to reduce staff number in our office and I KNOW though other sources that two jobs in Admin are going (there are six, and I work in admin) and I know I want to go and that someone else does as well.  No voluntary redundancy is on offer.  So if you were me would you ask to be considered to be made redundant?

You can always tell us here

Normally, I'd say that if you don't ask, you don't get. But who would you ask?

I would suggest going to the IT Director (after letting your supervisor know) and just saying something along the lines of:  "I know in today's economy lots of companies are downsizing a little to cut costs.  If anyone in my area needs to go, I'm willing to go.  It would be a little rough on those admins staying, as my duties would have to fall on their already burdened shoulders, as we're all busy folks, but we can do it if it will benefit the company."

As long as you let your supervisor know and he/she approves then you should be ok to discuss it in this general way.  You're not saying that your job is boring or you don't have enough to do or that you'll expendable, just that you're willing to sacrifice yourself to help the company cut costs, even though your loss will be felt throughout the facility.

Georgina

Can you talk to the person who entrusted you with the news in the first place?

After all if cutting from 6 to 2 is going to be made easier by having 2 who WANT to leave, isn't that a good thing?  (in terms of, it is a tough job at the best of times, but at this time of year to make people redundant and out of a job is worse news!)

Now I think about it I really do wonder!

Hi Georgina!

Ohh, I know what you mean about wanting to say something but lips are sealed.  In our line of work, we hear lots of things, but can't repeat it to anybody.  Hey, a point of trivia about the word "secretary" that someone told me a while back - it is a latin origin and definition is "holder of secrets."  Ain't that the truth???

Getting back to your question about interest in going redundant - That's the power of knowing secrets that you are entrusted with...It never hurts to voice your interest, but only speak directly with the person who shared that secret  with you.  Good luck!

Just blab what you know around work, and you'll be fired quick enough.

Seriously, the poster who suggested you bring it up with your boss in a round-about way and volunteer to be let go had the best idea.

WELL ... now you have told US ... it's all over da web ...

Yes, I agree with the others, it won't do any harm to speak with the Sharer of Secrets about your aspirations.  Good luck!

PS I love the bit about "holder of secrets".  In my last job, one of the directors used to refer to admins as Secret-aries.
