I have been working for this company for a little over 5 months now as a temp on a temp/hire position. My boss and I get along very well and he likes my work and everything seems fine.
My problem is this, I took this job with a paycut just because I was promised that this job if they liked me, would turn perm within 5 months. It is now way over this timeframe and still I have not been hired. I know that my boss wants to hire me but as of a few weeks ago, they were still working on the budget and are not sure if they have the money budgeted for me.
What should I do? How do I go about talking with my boss and tell him that I need to get an answer if I will or will not be hired soon because I need the benefits and want to be able to stay. We have a good relationship but I have always been non-assertive and it has been difficult for me to ask for what I need and want in a job.
Thank you for your help.
Susan

If you feel comfortable enough, I say go for it. Tact and decorum are a must, be polite, but be honest. You need to get on with your life and move forward. If they aren't, you should get looking. A pay cut is no fun and can put you into serious financial problems (I'm going through this right now). Best wishes!

I agree with Yankee. Go for it but follow her advice of tact and decorum.
Good Luck and let us know what transpires.

Are you working through an agency? If so, have you asked them about any feedback the employer might have given them (but maybe not you?)
Just trying to find another angle on this. Good luck~!

NJ -
Crafty has a point. You are working for the temp agency. As suggested in previous threads, it is recommended that any concerns be discussed with the temp agency representative. I would discuss my concerns with my rep and let that person contact the company you are working for. I worked temped for one company for 1-1/2 years before they hired me. I was able to get a raise during that time but there are very little benefits offered when working temp.
There are too many companies out there using temps in order not to pay for benefits. This saves them a great deal of money on medical, taxes, etc. However, in the long run, if they keep having to train a new temp, it could be costing more!
Go to your temp agency first - you are employed by them.

Thank you so much for your quick responses. I did go to my agency and the company I am working with has given her no responses other than they are working on the budget still and will get back to her. My agency is getting more and more upset because they are dragging their feet.
My main problem is that I really need benefits and more money and I know that when I get hired I will get both.
I received an e-mail a little while ago from the new head administrative assistant who spoke with my boss about me and she is pushing for me to get hired. That is a little relief but I am still a temp with no benefits. I guess I am losing my patients and will give the company another week and then I will start my search for a new job (permanent only).
Thanks again for your help and happy new year!

Hi, your story sounds so much like my own. First, I worked with this same company, as a temp, but in a different area for 10 months. I started here in Sept. and was told that this is a new position that was just created. They need to get it approved through accounting before they can hire someone permanent.
I like working here and I'm sure everyone here likes me as well. After I had only worked here a month I discovered that I had a serious back problem and needed to have surgery immediately. They held the position for me for a month while I was recovering and wouldn't let the agency place anyone else here.
The pay is good, but I desperately need the health benefits.
I just don't want to put another 10 months into nothing. At the first place I mentioned I had many responsibilities and really felt they should have given me the opportunity to stay there. I don't want that happening again. What is the usual time for a temp position? Should I just give it a little while longer? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Marilyn
