Gov. Palin spent $150K on her wardrobe to campaign. Can I get this job? When she donates it to charity, will it go to me? Millions of people out of work, next to living under a bridge. $150K for clothes. I am outraged.

Mrs Palin's wardrobe costs are quoted in this country as £90,000 (Sterling). That's a vast amount of money for clothes for a short campaign. I expect this amount covers a whole lot more than just her suits and dresses and probably accessories and grooming as well. However, it probably isn't a lot of money for clothes for someone in her position over, say, a longer period of time. The cost of really good clothes - and I'm not talking couture or expensive designers, but well tailored items - is quite high.
Unfortunately, women, whether they are candidates in an election or wives of candidates, are very much judged by their appearance. Everyone would notice and remark on their clothes. Every political wife or female politician, whether it was Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Reagan, Mrs Clinton, Mrs McCain or Mrs Obama, has been subject to the same scrutiny. Cruel, stupid and pointless but there it is.
Perhaps Mrs Palin might have made political capital out of "I'm wearing my old clothes and not spending on luxuries in these straightened times", but she didn't. It may seem arrogant, but the simple fact is that she went out and bought a new wardrobe to look good on the campaign trail.
The question voters in the States should be asking themselves is not whether Mrs Palin's expenditure on her wardrobe is appropriate, but whether she will make a good President in the future.

I did read somewhere that she has a rather high stake in oil fields or something and that she has her own personal private fortune which of course means that the party faithful should naturally carry on suffering from the credit crunch, lose their homes, worry about terrorism etc but also pay for her to have haut couture (sp?) which she will promptly throw away (or as good as for charity) where it will be sold on ebay! - past experience shows she will be an atrocious presidential vice-candidate (never mind president) but will probably get elected!
Anyone else more cynical than me?
Jess (man I have too much time on my hands when all the filing is done - is it Friday yet?)

I hadn't heard this paricular tidbit of news yet. So, what's the story - who paid for the clothing? Did she pay for it personally or did the campaign? If the campaign or the taxpayers paid for it, then that is one thing. However, if she paid for it out of her personal funds, then I frankly don't see anything wrong with it. It is her money to spend as she and her husband see fit, and if they can afford it, then why not?
Do I wish I could afford to spend $150,000 on clothes - YES!!
Do I begrudge someone else who can afford it - NO!!
If it was paid out of personal funds, then I consider it to be their business and not mine.

I think it may have come out of campaign funds. However, it's up to the Party in question to allocate expenditure from campaign funds - depending, of course, on the legislation governing such funds.

The Republican National Committee paid for the wardrobe for not only Sarah Palin, but her family as well. They indicated that they plan to take the clothes back after the election and donate them to charity, regardless of the outcome.

In these tight times, we can't even purchase office supplies right now. I hope she paid for them out of her own funds. However, they are judged by appearance and not always by their knowledge and experience. Alot of things are like that in life. Also, in these times of high prices, that price is not surprising if she was buying suits, shoes, handbags etc. You know she did not shop at TJ Maxx or Ross discount stores:) I would say Saks is more like it.

And excuse me for saying so but why aren't they asking this same question about the other side of the fence too? Oh wait, forgot, she's the only female in the running. I swear they have been after her since they announced she was McCain's running mate. You know, if you looked that closely at the other side, I'm sure you would find similar things going on, and not even blinked at. Sorry, I feel better now. Diamondlady Peer Moderator

I want to know how one spends $150k on a wardrobe. I mean, I understand that they shopped at places like Nieman Marcus and Saks 5th, but those style suits she's wearing, cost maybe about $1000 each. She'd have to have bought 150 suits! I mean, what did they do, buy 80 suits, 80 pairs of designer shoes, and $60k on jewelry?
It's sick...$150k could have helped a lot of people.

Diamondlady, I have to agree with you. In this day and age it is still a double standard for women. But, Michelle Obama admits to shopping at TJMax and JCrew! $150K for clothes paid by contributions to the Party! That is absurd.
