I think regardless of US v UK, it does depend on the kind of industry sector we work in. The private sector for example is more likely to pay out bonuses than the public sector. I have worked in both industries and both are very different.
Also if you work in the kind of company where you are selling a product, meeting milestones and delivering projects, bonuses will be offered as an incentive.
That's why I feel admins are ignored when it comes to this sort of thing. I personally don't have targets, I don't work on a production line and I don't deliver any kind of project. However, I do other tasks to support my boss and his department which should still warrant a bonus even if it's a lesser percentage than some other employees.
We have a very strong union here and they seem to be the driving force behind some of these perks.
