Hello all !
I'm looking for a job in London as a bilingual secretary or PA but I didn't have any luck for the moment. I'm a bit disapointed. I'm french, speak english, italian, practice the shorthand in french and in english, know how to use the computer, I even learn spanish. But for the moment, no luck. And I must say that's depressing and I don't know how to carry on. If anybody have any ideas. Don't know how to make my plan the reality. Anyway, I needeed to talk and say what I feel and maybe somebody could help me. Thanks Céline

OK, chuckles. You are not going to go down that route. Not today. Not on my watch. If I can do it, so can you (and yes you have far more skills than I do!).
First I would add I was made redundant on the 31st May and have been looking for work ever since! Today I received a telephone call offering me a floating secretarial job in a law firm paying a very nice salary! I am now waiting for a confirmation letter for the new job so send me good vibes everyone!
Next I would add, you CAN make your own luck if you ask the right questions!
Tip for the day is telephone Angela Mortimer and ask for Natasha (they are on the internet and it is their Golden Square office off Regent Street, London that you want!)
If you want mention I told you to call (the name is Jessica Waddington!) and I am sure she will be able to help you get that dream job.
Good luck and now - get on with it you ninny! You know you can do it!
Jess (sorry if I sound a bit harsh but you really must not let yourself get depressed!)

Any time, my dear!
I don't like being out of work, not even the 6 months off on sick leave, and know how damaging even the slightest doubt can be. Sometimes it takes a snap in the eye to realise you can overcome anything so long as you never surrender!
Good luck with the search. It will happen.
Jess

Hello Jess !
I have got one more question (another one, yes...). Do you live in London ? Because as you know I'm looking for a job in London and I would like to know if it is difficult to find a flat and if it is expensive ? of course, if you know. I can give you my private email address and we can exchange. Thanks again for last time, I was a bit down. That's much better now. Céline

Ah! Renting or buying? Both are expensive depending upon where you want to live. Sometimes it is better to do a little travelling to keep the living costs down but then you pay more to travel. I would suggest you do an internet search on whatever you can afford. Try fish4.co.uk and similar sites, work out how much you want to earn, how much you can afford for living and travel and then go see areas that you can afford to see if you like the place.
I used to live in SE1 (elephant and castle - dodgy!), and SW1 (Rochester Row - nice but expensive) and W2 (posh but free accommodation with family). Now live in Kent!
I am going to be working in Canary Wharf, commuting in each day.
Hope this helps but please pm me and I will gladly call you (or you can call me!) to get you started.
Best wishes,
Jess

At the top of this page you have access to a 'private mail' box which can be used to send private mail to members. They can also respond direct to you via the same route!
Click on "Send Private" and we can email privately.
Neat trick, eh?

Ladies,
Just catching up on reading previous postings I missed.
Jess - well done on securing a job - we must be experts at this by now huh? And let that be a lesson to anyone else reading these forums - yes we can get down about losing a job or being out of work, but all good things come to those who wait. For some the waiting may be longer than others but persevere, be assertive and above all confident.
Celine can I suggest that if you haven't already acquired the necessary IT or shorthand skills for the jobs you are seeking, you try to attend night class or part-time study. 9 times out of 10 these days potential employers will ask for qualifications and will use this as their method of shortlisting candidates.
After completing my A levels I completed a bi-lingual secretarial course at college and the examining body and resultant certification is well recognised throughout the UK.

Hope things are going well for you Jess, have you started yet?
Celine, I don't know how easy it would be to jobhunt from France or wherever you're living at the moment. If you can find somewhere to stay/live in London DLA looked for secretaries with language skills, and were quite nice to me though I never felt banking (their main client area) was me and ended up leaving a longer term job after a few weeks because I'd been offered a temporary contract which would give me better experience in terms of my longer term aims.
London generally is very expensive. Putney looks very pretty, near the river etc, but might be a stretch on a secretary's wages. I moved to a working class, multiracial area of north London with something of an image problem, and very little that could be called "pretty" because it was only a couple of miles from friends and family and the places I really knew already and it was a bit cheaper, but still call Tottenham home over 10 years later, however, I'm lucky not to have to rent and to have a reasoanble mortgage, couldn't have done it much later than I did. Many people move into shared houses, but that can feel quite hard.
Hope you'll let us know if you have come or do come to London.
Luci

Hello all !
Just thank you all for your help and advice. They are good to me. To answer to your question I subscribed to reed.co.uk, secinthecity. Moreover, the agency Angela mortimer contacted me. I start to see the end of the tunnel and Jess was very helping. I hope I didn't make too many mistakes when I start talking like that I just write and write... I will let you know how things goes. Thanks again.
