My father bought one (used) and seems to enjoy it. He takes it on trips of any real length where they will be staying a while in one location (like about a week). The price of the rv park is really cheap and if you're going to stay for a week, you save a lot on hotel prices to help cover the cost of the gas. But again, that depends on where you are going. If you take it from Georgia to California, the price of gas might not be offset by the hotel savings, but you'd have to do the math.
As for sleeping... they still suggest that all passengers be seated in chairs with seatbelts and not up and moving around while it is driving. This is for safety reasons, because if the RV were to get in a wreck, you have no safety harness and could wind up anywhere. So depending on how well you follow directions, DH might see you more than you think.
