Do you know, I don't think most of us realise how lucky we are.

I've just watched a TV programme about young girls and women who run away from their homes in Iran because they are being beaten or forced into arranged marriages.

One girl (19 years old) said that her family chose her clothes and her food for her.  She was not allowed to go out on her own.  She'd run away from her home 20-30 times.  Her sister-in-law came to bring her back and told her "to be a good girl and obey her family".

I'm going to bed tonight thanking my lucky stars and praying for these girls.

I remember reading an article in Seventeen about a couple who had come to America to get away from the girl's family.  She had been arranged to marry one of her cousins who she dispised.  She ran away, refused to eat and other things.

Her father actually put her in a body cast for several months and forced her to stay in a room w/ no windows.  He denied her anything but food and water.  No TV, magazines, books, or music.

I can't even imagine that kind of hell, and I'm very proud of her for standing up to what she believed.  I know I couldn't go through with that.  After I read the article, I thanked God for giving me such wonderful parents, and for placing me here in good 'ol America.

Wow, Ellen.  What ethnicity was that girl, out of curiosity?
