Damn, I'm ticked off! I have been ripped off by scoundrels. Stuff I've written--at Officeclick and other websites--has been swiped and used by scumbags for profit. Theirs! Sometimes it's been verbatim, word-for-word theft. Sometimes it's been more subtle. Andrea, I appreciate the care you've taken with your Terms of Service, the safeguards you have put in place to protect everybody's copyright rights. But the truth is, nobody owns nothin' on the 'Net. It's all up for grabs. Be careful, everybody. The stuff you write here has value. Mustang "Rush me to the Burn Unit" Sally

Sal,
May I ask how you discovered the theft and what the sitch is? Or would you prefer not to say? Understand either way.

Crafty/Shannon: I think (no, I KNOW) that the local media--among others--were monitoring my posts at several websites, including Oclick (especially my posts to and from Soultrain). I got suspicious a couple months ago at an eerie and unending bunch of "coincidences"--I kept hearing and reading my very own words, but they were claimed by and credited to other people. (I know, I know, Crafty. This sounds really Twilight Zoney) I am sure that my stuff (and probably other people's) was swiped. Arghhh! I know there are folks for whom this wouldn't be a big deal. But it is to me. I've been taking a sabbatical from the 'Net. It's not a fun place to be anymore.

Sal! Im as outraged as you are, and if you want to contact me I can give you some resources. OC had a right to non exclusive reproduction, no one else did. The copyright to your words is STILL yours if you want to persue it, something as simple as a cease and desist might do the trick.
And Im sorry it happened to you I've already had a similar experience. I feel raped and violated and if you want to talk about what you can do about it, email me!

OK, Sally, what stuff that we've written has "value" and who on earth to? The only people I ever remember waxing poetic at OC were you, soultrain, Andrea, MightyMouse, and LeggyGal. Energizer had a good run-on paragraph every once in awhile, too, if memory services me correctly.

I'm a goldmine! Lol! I really wouldn't fancy some hack wanting a quote for an article on bad bosses and taking stuff out of my posts and using them as quotes. Nor do I want my opinions on ethics quoted out of context (could be damaging to my political career such as it is), or my anecdotes used to flesh out some management book.
Journalists are very lazy. Back in the old days we'd rip of everything we needed to put in the paper.

It seems to me it takes a great deal more effort, not to mention time, for cryin' out loud, to surf the web than to think up something original.

The situations that people post about, words that are said, direct quotes even, have allegedly been stolen.
To take you back to the birth of The Admin Authority, Andrea had written the hydra saga tales, as posts in OC forums. According to that site's TOS, once a community member hit that magic 'post' button, the words became the property of OC (meaning they could take what she'd written and what the rest of us were writing, and compile it into an admin-oriented book, without our permission or without a waiver and without paying any of us a dime). That caused Andrea to react by setting up this site, where, by the Terms of Service, the posts belong to the community member.
MustangSal (aka SinatraFan) has run into this problem apparently, from the days of OC.
I wondered what, if anything, she was able to do about it.
Sal, ya got an answer?

Thanks for clearing that up. I used to visit OC sparingly and remember some of ya. I remember the hydra saga from here, which I wish I could have read the whole thing. But I guess I feel differently about that.
Once I hit that post button, what happens to those words is anybodys guess. If someone stole it, well, I didn't copyright it directly. And my words aren't any big deal anyway. I guess if you wrote a short story on her, sure, you'd want it protected. But if you have great writing talent, why waste it here? Yes, we as the TAA community would love it, but you're not getting paid for it. And since we live in THIS society where unless you hit Lotto or are Anna Nicole Smith (smarter, actually), then you have to work. And if you can work at something you love, like writing, do it!
Sinatrafan, whatever happened?
