I'm going to vent here and it may seem like a small thing, but it happens over and over around here.....
We're getting a new VP for our department after well over a year. The "unveiling" is today. None of the admins were told WHEN the meeting was, WHERE it was, WHO was supposed to be there, WHAT was the order of events, nothing. There was rumor about a luncheon after the meeting, but nobody knew if the entire "professional" staff (as opposed to what?) was to attend, or was it just certain individuals being invited, or, or, or.....
When we asked repeatedly for details, we were told by the assistant VP, "Oh, the directors all got an email about that. They have all the information." Yeah, right. Like the woman I support who STILL needs me to open her email for her since she can't figure it out? Or the guy I support who consistently overbooks his calendar? We had 15 directors running around this morning trying to find out what the HELL was going on, and the admins weren't PERMITTED to be of any help!
Now, let me clarify...it's not the individual directors that we directly support that have this attitude. The situation is just as frustrating for them. It's the upper management folks. They all have their own assistants, but the attitude either rubs off, or they're ordered not to say anything to us. I think we have a pretty good crop of admins here. Some have college degrees, most are taking courses, and three of the five have been in the admin business for 15+ years and yet, we get this "amused" oh-aren't-they-cute-trying-to-be-professionals reaction when we try to be proactive around here.
This place would be so much more efficient if everything wasn't this stupid cloak-and-dagger routine.
Okay, getting down from the soapbox now. Thanks. Feel a lot better now.

Boy, can I relate! A few years ago our department got a new VP, and NO ONE knew he was even hired except the "big guys" at the corporate headquarters! Our previous VP left a year prior to this (not by his own choice!) and we had some interim managers running the department in the absence of a VP. The day the new guy started, he showed up expecting that at least I (as his Admin) would be there to welcome him. Fortunately I had a last minute change of plans, or I wouldn't have even been in the office that day! I happened to walk past the receptionist desk on my way to the accounting department, and he was standing at the desk talking to the receptionist! She introduced him to me, and he said "oh, I guess you've heard of me?" My response was an honest, "No, I'm sorry, I can't say that I have. Have you been with the company very long?" He laughed and said that was his first day, and that he was the new VP of IT -- and my immediate boss!! I was SO embarrassed! He shrugged it off, and then made it a point to include me in EVERYTHING from that moment on. He said that to have kept me in the dark was very poor judgment on the part of the "powers that be" and said he'd make sure I was always kept in the loop where he was concerned. Two years later and he's kept his word!!

P.S. The next time I met up with the "big guy" who decided the new VP should be a well-kept secret, I let him know I thought it put me in a very awkward position. He just said "no one knew -- we thought it best." Sometimes the power just goes to the head and blocks out all reasoning ability! (read: the guy has no clue!!!).

Never ask for logic or reason or common sense in the upper management. Also do not ask for courtesy, consideration or good manners in dealing with their "underlings". Its just not there.
Take a deep breath and try to forget about it.

"We thought it best" ? What the heck kinda reasoning is that? Can you imagine if this went another way? "Call security, there's a strange man here claiming to be the new VP."
