Boy, can I relate! A few years ago our department got a new VP, and NO ONE knew he was even hired except the "big guys" at the corporate headquarters! Our previous VP left a year prior to this (not by his own choice!) and we had some interim managers running the department in the absence of a VP. The day the new guy started, he showed up expecting that at least I (as his Admin) would be there to welcome him. Fortunately I had a last minute change of plans, or I wouldn't have even been in the office that day! I happened to walk past the receptionist desk on my way to the accounting department, and he was standing at the desk talking to the receptionist! She introduced him to me, and he said "oh, I guess you've heard of me?" My response was an honest, "No, I'm sorry, I can't say that I have. Have you been with the company very long?" He laughed and said that was his first day, and that he was the new VP of IT -- and my immediate boss!! I was SO embarrassed! He shrugged it off, and then made it a point to include me in EVERYTHING from that moment on. He said that to have kept me in the dark was very poor judgment on the part of the "powers that be" and said he'd make sure I was always kept in the loop where he was concerned. Two years later and he's kept his word!!

P.S. The next time I met up with the "big guy" who decided the new VP should be a well-kept secret, I let him know I thought it put me in a very awkward position. He just said "no one knew -- we thought it best." Sometimes the power just goes to the head and blocks out all reasoning ability! (read: the guy has no clue!!!).
