First you might check if his miles already allow him access.  If your boss is a frequent traveler with layovers it is definitely worth it.  Yes they are expensive.  Perks - quieter area usually children free with snacks or drinks provided.  Some even have showers!  Business people ususally appreciate the wifi connectivity or just the abilitity to charge up their laptop before the flight.
My dh is an airline employee and we are seriously considering paying the airline employee discount rate so we can access those rooms.
I would look at his airports and make sure they do have the lounge for the airline you are thinking of purchasing - not all airports have all airlines lounges.  You can google Crown rooms for Delta and see what amenities are availabe in certain locations. (or whichever airline you are thinking about)
