And most particularly, donations of office furniture?  The company I once worked for was accquired about two years ago, and the office I use to work at is officially vacated...there was a lot of office furniture, and quite a bit of it has been re-distrubuted to other locations. But there still is a lot of cubicles, file cabinets and things like that. We do not need them ourselves.  We thought about the obvious, which is to donate it so it can be used in the recovery efforts in New York. But just who would you contact?  Anybody have any information?  We need to move on this pretty quickly, and I would appreciate any information you might have.  And also to my fellow TAA'ers here in Illinois, any local charities that (churches, schools) you know of would be helpful too!

Daisylee,

My best recommendation for donations for New York City is go thru American Red Cross or Salvation Army and request that this is where you would like to donate and I am sure they can point you in the right direction.

If you would like to keep donations local, check your city of commerce website and I am sure they will provide lots of places locally you can donate.

My .02 cents worth.

I second what Chris said but also make sure you get a receipt for tax write-off purposes.

Jewels and Chris,

Thanks so much for the information.  I went into the United Way's web site, and they have a form I was able to fill out that specified what I wanted to donate, and I also sent them an email explaining what we wanted to do. It's pretty urgent we get this stuff out of our old office before the lease is up in December.  I got a response back within an hour from the President of the United Way no less!  We're well on our way to getting this stuff out the door to some company trying to re-establish their presence since the attacks...so they were most anxious to take all the cubicles (about 50) and chairs (about 100) and file cabinets...we had tons of stuff!  They'll arrange to tear it all down and pick it up.  I am just so impressed at how fast this is going.  Just wanted to share with you all.  You're the best!

I just wanted to say I think it's wonderful what you all are doing.  At our company we've arranged for a few of our clients to use our space in NY, NJ and CT.

Yep, my company has been doing a lot (including the same thing with space) for all the folks at the WTC.  A LOT of them are customers.

And I gotta tell ya, it feels good to do good!  Especially on such a large scale.  And even though it's not me personally giving away any part of my fortune, I still feel really proud of what I'm helping to do!
