Did anybody happen to catch the news show the other night that showed how loose these student visas are tracked, if they are even tracked at all? Man, that more than anything, is scary. The reporter held up a stack of 15 applications where the students had never even shown up at the school they said they were going to attend, and the INS had no idea where they were, even though their visas have expired. All they know is that they are in the US somewhere. One of the INS interviewees said that they can't be responsible for the other end of a paper transaction; it's impossible to keep up with all of that information. Another said that they didn't think they should tighten up the security/scrutiny of applications because that might discourage international students. Well, hell-o-o, what do you all think about that? What if anything should be done to overhaul INS? Are there any civil liberties issues in here and, if so, in view of recent events, why should we care? etc., etc., and so forth

My personal opinion is that these applications should be treated exactly like all the rest. Perhaps we will discourage some international students from attending our schools. But I feel that it is more important to protect the citizens of this country. If our standards are too strict, the students can go to another country! I think it is time for the INS to get VERY STRICT ON ALL APPLICATIONS/VISAS. I think our time of having open borders and being relaxed about who has entered this country or who hasn't left when they should have is OVER.

I hope you're right, spitfire. I'm hoping that anybody who knows about any questionable people would call the authorities to check it out, regardless of ethnicity or nationality. I wonder if this happens in other countries, because the somewhat evasive INS official really was correct in stating that it is akin to a nightmare to try to track all of that stuff. What do you think are some methods whereby it could be done?

I must say I know absolutely nothing about how INS works - how they keep track of ANY people who are here on visas. In the case of students, I would think that the schools they are supposed to be attending should bear some responsibility. I see no reason why the school couldn't report to the INS when one of their international students doesn't show or suddenly disappears. That certainly seems like a simple enough thing to me.
