Why does my boss ask me to get someone on the phone and then goes in his office and calls someone so he can't take the call after I have the person he requested to get on the phone on the phone? ![Huh](http://www.deskdemon.com/dnet/Smileys/default/huh.gif) ??!!!!!? ![Huh](http://www.deskdemon.com/dnet/Smileys/default/huh.gif) What's the purpose of that? Why didn't he just call that person himself when he was ready to talk? WHY, WHY, OH WHY......... Is it just me or does anyone else's boss do this? Wishing it were 5:00....

Take a deep breath Exec and believe that you are not alone. I know how frustrating that can be. Maybe you can be honest with him and ask him to stay off the phone when he requests that you place a call for him.
Example:
Bossie: "Myra, could you please get so and so on the phone for me right away"?
Myra: "I'd love to do that for you bossie, but could you stay off the phone until I put that call through to you? Last time you asked me to place a call, I had your party on the line for you, and in the meantime, you had placed another call that could not be interrupted. This situation was embarrassing to me because I had initiated the phone call. I felt foolish even though I know it was not your intent to make me feel that way".
Bossie: "I'm sorry Myra. You're right, it was not my intent to embarrass you. I'll stay off the phone while you place this call for me. Thanks Myra".
Just a suggestion Execsec. Anyone else have any ideas how to handle this situation?

We're talking about a boss who just yesterday sent me an email saying he needed a number for XXXX Johnson at XXXXX company. That's it. No town, no state, no country, not even what universe. I recognized that the company was one of our distributors so I took a chance and looked in our distributor listing. There were 20 companies, in about 15 different towns in Texas. Because I haven't been here very long, I asked one of the other admins who told me to check with their headquarters in Houston. I did and I got the man's phone number. When I mentioned that it would help if I had a city to start with, wannabe bossie sort of gave me some lip about it. He said "they're one of our biggest distributors, you should have the number." I reminded him that I did have the number, but when the company is in 20 cities, knowing where to start would have helped. Trust me, he's a young whippersnapper who is definitely "high maintenance."

Sounds like that jerk needs to be whipped into shape. Don't worry too much though. He'll learn when it all hits the fan.

Sounds like time for Xena, warrior Admin to go in and shape that bossie up quick. A few well-meaning, well-placed descriptives would show him the potential folly of messing with an admin and not giving you the respect and consideration you deserve.
Next time he wants you to call someone and then gets on the phone, go in and hand him their number on a message pad. Play it off like you called them, they couldn't hold and he was on his phone, so now he can call them back. Keeping mum about the fact that you didn't actually call, never say they didn't/couldn't hold and you're set. Bossie now has the number and can call at his convenience.
Best of luck!

Good suggestion, Countrigal. I may just try that. He really can be a nice guy, he's just spoiled rotten (and I wasn't the one who made him that way either!).

Spoiled rotten, or just an airhead? If he's extremely busy, it's possible he could forget from your desk to his that he even asked. Just get him to promise to stay off the phone, citing the fact that it doesn't make either one of you look too bright! Been there, but thank heaven it's been a long time ago!!

I think that sometimes the young whippersnappers need to flex their muscles to feel powerful or out of shear ignorance. We need to explain to them that we are not mindreaders. Remember, if they are new to a "senior" position we have to train them well so that the next administrator that works for them will think they are a great boss!
My boss was promoted from the position of account manager and was just a "child" when we first started working together. Since I had more experience than he did, I had to "break him in" i.e. Please don't shout my name from your desk but call me on the intercom.
Now, almost two years later, he is a truly great boss who does things my way (only he thinks it's HIS way).
