Is a normal day for you mostly reactive or proactive?

I would have to say it is necessary to be reactive where things are going pete tong, but proactive in order to do a professional job! Contradictory, I know, but there is a marked lack of common sense around in life nowadays!
Jess (less than 2 weeks to go and still cleaning the proverbial mess off the floor, door, windows etc!)

Reactive. I can plan to work on a project but with attorneys your day will never be boring. The only time I can plan my day is when they are traveling and even then the phone or emails may take precedence.

Proactive. That's one of the things I like about my job. My job is to review the work of others, so it's 90% proactive. There are those instances where something is brought as a rush or emergency, then it's reactive, but luckily that's the exception.

It is a toss up:-) I manage two Sr Leaders very busy schedules and all that entails with travel, international and domestic, etc. Both commute regularily to HQ in another state and have offices in both locations. Depending on the day I can be putting out fires or preventing them from starting, depending on who is involved:-)
I did get my review last week and scored top of the chart in being proactive and keeping my guys organized:-) made me feel pretty good....:-)

I would say it's a 60/40 split for me with 60% being reactive as the work we do depends on external forces. I can plan for what we think is the majority of work but then situations change and we end up chasing our tails - or sometimes doing a complete U-turn. At least I can say I've never had a boring day at work in the last 10 years .

Like most people, I strive for proactive, but all it takes is one phone call or email to send MY nicely organized to-do list down the drain. Unfortunately, I can't predict, much less control, the myriad external forces that affect our daily workload. Makes for a frustrating day sometimes.
