Do you have time off during the holidays or are you working throughout the next two weeks? I know many countries have "Boxer Day." Just what IS Boxer Day? Does it stand for something or just a name for "the day after Christmas?" We need to adopt that day here in the US!!! For those who are working do you find it more busy or do you have time to catch up? As for me, I will be working and I find it a bit slower but still busy enough.
Once again Happy Holidays! Susan

I've got the day after Christmas off which is my MIL's birthday. So that worked out pretty well for us now that she's living with us. My husbands company has Christmas shut down from Christmas to New Years. This year, he has the option to work overtime if he wants to because they are so far behind in orders. So, he's working the week. We don't have any kids, so it's not like we have to be home watching the kids while they are on Christmas break, and husband decided he'd like to take advantage of the overtime while he can. We didn't have anything planned this year anyway. Traditionally we would be at his mom's house which was a 3 1/2 hour drive to Eastern part of NY State. But, Christmas Eve is at mom and dad's house then Christmas morning at our house. Diamondlady Peer Moderator Edited by diamondlady on 21/12/05 07:58 PM.

I have the 23rd and the 26th as holidays, since the actual days are over the weekend. I took the following Thursday and Friday as a vacation! We've been at it hammer and tongs for the last 8 weeks and I need a rest!!!
Fortunately, I have a little break the end of January as well, so the post-holiday doldrums will be alleviated a bit by looking forward to that...

We're closed 1/2 day Friday 12/23 ("Christmas Eve") and all day Monday 12/26 ("Christmas Day") and again 1/2 day Friday 12/30 and all day Monday 1/2 for New Year's holidays. I'll be here all day in between the holidays - I'm saving my vacation days. It was tempting though, to use only 4 days vacation and have 10 days off in a row! (4 days = 1/2 days 12/23 and 12/30; full days 12/27, 28, 29). Not only am I not taking off to save vacation days, but I will be starting a new position on January 1 and want to make an "eager beaver" impression. It's not official, and I've been chomping at the bit to give y'all details. As tumultuous as the past two years have been, I'm really afraid of jinxing the deal if I talk about it. "Everyone" is talking about it here, but there is still nothing in WRITING, and I haven't seen an official dollar figure. A good sign - the CFO did come and ask me some questions today - including what I've been told my salary was going to be, and I was invited to the new group's Holiday Party on Monday. Just cross your fingers for me! Now I'm nervous that I'm telling you anything at this point! Keep telling myself - it's not going to jinx it... it's not going to jinx it... DonnaP99

Because of the way my son's school break is, we're taking next week off (Monday is a holiday for both our employers, and so is Monday after New Year's). So that's a lot of time off. But it's the last time I'll be taking until spring, most likely, unless I take off to do school-related things and then it will be half a day or less.
I'd prefer to stay here and work. I hate the whole traveling in the snow thing. But we're kind of locked into it, so away we go.
Boxing Day is a UK tradition, also celebrated in Canada and Australia. Wikipedia.org has a good, short description. I'm nearly always in Canada that day and to me, it's the day when the really great stores in Toronto are all closed and I'm stuck either going to the movies or toughing it out with the in-laws. But fortunately, this year I'll be in Ohio on Boxing Day, so no issues for me.

I'm off on Friday, Dec 23 (charged as annual leave) and on Dec 26 (for the holiday). I'm not taking any other leave, since I'm still trying to rebuild from my maternity leave and need all I can get for those times that the kids get sick. I'm also hoping that I'll be starting a new job in the New Year.
Good luck on your job hope... Let us know how it goes!
Happy Holidays All!

We finish on Friday 23rd and don't return until Tuesday 3rd January. Our official holidays are 25th, 26th December and 1st January. We had to take 3 extra days from our leave to make up a week's holiday when the office is closed eg. 28th, 29th and 30th Dec. If any of those holidays fall at a weekend, then we get a weekday off in lieu.

My boss is a Brit, so I get Boxing Day off just because he closes the office that day. I get the 23rd off for my paid Christmas holiday, but I don't think he is paying me for Boxing Day. But I'd rather be at home with my kid anyway, so its ok. Then we also get Jan 2nd off for hangover recovery. I asked him what Boxing Day was, and he said that frankly he doesn't know anymore about it than the rest of the world does. He gave me the explanation that his American wife found on the internet. Something about poor servants/employees who got to bring their empty boxes to work the day after Christmas, and the bosses would give them all the left over goodies to take home. But you will find a few other explanations of what it is online for sure. When I was working for a major university here in town, I used to get the whole week from Christmas Eve to New Years day off from work as a PAID holiday. That was one of the best employee benefits ever! Rr

I'm in the office tomorrow, but only for half a day, and back in early January. We have the usual Bank Holidays, and one privilege day. I'm using up the remainder of my vacation to make up just over a whole week's vacation. I'm really looking forward to the holidays. It's been an interesting year - a tough one in some ways -but a good one.
Anyway, happy holidays everyone. I hope everyone has a good time and that 2006 brings lots of good things.

Hope everyone has a great Christmas and New Year!

Am not back until 3 Jan officially, but sort of doing a bit from home ....
Being in the UK, I get Boxing Day (Monday 26) as a Bank Holiday. Tues 27 Dec is a day off in lieu of Christmas falling at the weekend. My employer gives me an extra day off around Christmas and Easter; this is doubtless something to do with the "busy season" as the employer is the Church of England! So that's Wednesday 28 Dec taken care of; the Thursday and Friday come out of my leave entitlement. Monday 2 Jan is a day off in lieu of New Year's Day falling at the weekend.
But I'm currently doing the admin on a course starting in mid-Jan, so am working from home a wee bit every day - checking e-mails, booking flights, sending panic e-mails to the boss. I shall have myself an extra break at the end of Jan, methinks.

I was off the 23rd and 26. I get a 1/2 day the 30th and Jan. 2 off. Since I just started the new job in November, I don't have any time accrued for vacation yet.
