I have noticed this as well. I find that I can easily have the labels go through twice, but after that it's hit or miss if they end up speckled.
I try to save up my printing until I have a whole sheet.
Alternatively, I use the mini sheets where I can. These are sheets of labels that are about the same size as a standard business envelope. They go through laser printers (and probably have inkjet versions available). I found samples of them by going to Office Depot and typing mini sheets labels. Oddly enough when I did a search for mini-sheets on avery they didn't come up - and they own the trademark!
