OK, I feel stupid asking for advice on this, but as far as I'm concerned right now, it's DEFINITELY work related - or related to my performance, at least!

I'm having a VERY sleepy day, and just can't shake it.  I feel like I've taken some cold medicine, but I haven't!  What do YOU do when you're too sleepy to keep your head up?  Luckily, I have an office, with a door, and I've kept it closed all day long, so when I drift off no one knows - but it's really disconcerting, and I feel so stupid when I find my head bobbing and waking me up!  And I thought I slept OK last night!

I can't leave early; I have to pick up my daughter only a few blocks from work at 5:00 - so going home and coming back is just not going to happen.  Drugs (yes, I mean caffeine - and ALL else) are out of the question because of my irregular heartbeat.

Maybe stand out in the cold and try to kiss a metal post?  That would stimulate my body, at least!

G'night...  NO!  COLD WATER SPLASH!  Nah, then the make-up gets all screwy.

We've all been there I think - at least I know I have.

Can you drink coffee with your irregular heartbeat problem?  I wouldn't think so, but if you can grab a cup or even tastier - a chocolate bar!

My only other suggestion would be to take a good ten minute walk out in the cold.

Good luck

In the first day of my world history class in 8th grade, my teacher (Mr. Hugh Browning - - see, he impressed me so much I can still remember his name after all these 30-some years) told us all the rules of his class.  Since his class was the first after our lunch period, he knew the hazards of sleepy 8th graders with full stomachs.  Mr. Browning said to us all . . . "If you feel that you might be getting sleepy or start nodding off, it's not my teaching, it's because you didn't get enough sleep last night or it's too warm in the school or whatever.  If you think you're going to nod off, excuse yourself for a minute, walk out into the hallway, and slap yourself in the face.  Your own slapping of your face will be much better for you in the long run than falling asleep in MY class.  Don't EVER fall asleep in my class."

And you know what, no one ever fell asleep in his class. But occasionally someone would get up, say "excuse me", walk out into the hall, and then come back in.   The face slapping must have worked.

Your post made me think of Mr. Browning again after all these years.

I would take a walk around the building, if that is a possibility.  I stay awake by singing to myself (not out loud, of course).  I love (surprise) Golden Earring, the Eagles, the Beatles, Ray Orbison, and others with zippy tunes, and I don't hesitate to use them to my advantage - - especially on "droopy days."  Liven up your cube with your own personal cube.  You'll be having so doggone much fun that you may forget to go home at 5!  (Slight bouncing of the head and tapping of the toes is o.k.  Anything more than that, like flailing arms or gyrating hips could attract unnecessary attention.)

[ahem] . . . maybe I should take my own advice tonight!  "Liven up your cube with your own personal *****CONCERT*****!"  Ciao.

I can sympathize with sleepy days; I have a lot of them, often for no "good" reason (I've had enough sleep, I'm not sick, at least not with a cold or anything diagnosable). Lively music is good advice, so is a short walk-that perks me up unless I'm too tired or it's too rainy to go out and walk!  I'm really only supposed to have 1 cup of coffee a day due to anxiety but many times have to drink 2 or 3 to stay awake! I've tried ginseng tea but that doesn't seem to do the trick and frankly, it tastes like dirt. I'd sure like to see if anyone knows something else that works!

When I get sleepy at work, I usually throw on a good CD, and make a strong cup of ginger tea, which is very spicy, caffeine free and will definitely wake you up.

Try going outside for a few minutes, or doing some stretches at your desk.  IVillage.com has a link to Keyboard Yoga, which is kinda fun and will get your circulation going again.

When all else fails, I think I like Robbie's idea.  I could probably use a good self-inflicted slap in the face once in a while!

Well, it must be going around today.  I walked 1.5 miles in 40 degree weather at lunch time but I'm still feeling like I could nod off.  Can't wait to go home!!!
