It's been a crazy week, but today should be calm.  I have so much mail and just all kinds of stuff on my desk that I don't even know where to start.  I feel like by the time I would finish sorting through it it'll be time to go home, and I STILL won't have gotten anythind DONE!

Taking all advice,

Donna

DonnaP, it's not that bad!

As someone who can't find her desk on a regular basis, I know how overwhelming it can be to look at the mountain of paper and say "I must do ALL of this, TODAY".

Take a deep breath and dive in, because it probably won't take you more than an hour to get it all organized and prioritized.

I use a folder system, Pay bills, Do now, Read Later, etc. and have folders for my boss as well.  Once it's all prioritized and put away, I become so much more productive.

Then, just remember it's Friday, do as much as you can, and know the rest will be organized and ready to go when you get back to it.

Have a great weekend!

If you have a moment, in the ladies room or something like that (it DOES work) make a sort list of what has to be done.  Then prioritize the list.  Then break down each priority into smaller points, how to do each thing and then follow each point and cross it off the list as you go along.  It will make the dauting task easier, since you have a battle plan and then you'll feel accomplished at all of the crossed off tasks.  Best of luck and take it easy, it WILL get done.

Well my week was pretty slow, until yesterday. They did it again!! Saved everything for the last minute and piled it all on me at once. Somebody wanted something at 9, didn't hand it to me 'til 8:30 when I got in--not realizing that I need a little warmup time--I mean, by thetime I sort through my pile and realize it's there, it's overdue! Finally I had to start telling them, "You're gonna have to wait--I'm already working on two ASAP's right now!!"   And my computer seems to KNOW when it's one of "those" days cuz programs start crashing, it won't do what I want....arrgh! Still pretty busy today but hoping to make it through the pile soon. We have a St. Patty's day potluck at lunchtime!

Luck o' the Irish to ye all!

I can totally relate - I got back yesterday from 2 weeks vacation.  I figured, it piles up so bad in just one day off, might as well go for the biggie....plus, I did a Wednesday-to-the-next Thursday thing, so I'd have a short week when I got back.  My main thing is PRIORITIZE, PRIORITIZE, PRIORITIZE.  If you are the type who keeps a task log or priority folder, so much the better.  For me, it has to be doing the payroll (obviously, well all have to be paid) and everyone understands I am trying to make sure the $$ shows up so they are pretty much leaving me alone.  Also, I told people I'd be back a day later than I actually did return, so they wouldn't expect me and would therefore not venture into my area.  This worked pretty well, they all expressed surprise:  "I thought you weren't back until tomorrow!"  (Drat!  they saw me!)  Somehow seeing me reminds them of some vital task that needs doing (one guy actually called me the day before I left to tell me his desk drawers were sticking--like I'm going to rush over and spray them with WD40!) I guess this isn't very specific advice, but keep your priorities straight, and even a seemingly overwhelming mess becomes much easier to handle.  I also try to put things away when I am done with them, rather than having stacks of papers and books all out.  Seeing the clear desktop gives you some hope.   Plus it's Friday!  And bossie is on vacation today!  So no last minute rush jobs he forgot to give me earlier......

Leaving on time in PA (with my FLA tan!)

Donna,

First lesson taught in how to deal with the paper tiger is handle each piece of paper once!

Just clear off a spot and take each item one at a time...and deal with it.  If it is to be filed, then write in the upper right-hand corner where it goes so you don't have to re-read it later.  Put all the filing together and you can deal with it when you can see your desk again!

You'll have it all done in no time and then...it's the weekend.  YEA..
