Did anybody go and see this [American movie]? Tell me, what did you think? When I read that the funniest lines were used in the trailer, it squelched any desire that I may have had to pay big money for it. I usually wait for the videos to come out, anyway, on anything I want to see. I know some women were mightily offended by Shallow Hal, even to the point of picketing it at the theatres. I've spoken to a couple who thought it was stupid, and I've spoken to one who said it had a good message at the end. Who has a thought to share on this flick?

I saw the trailers and it looks even stupider than "Something About Mary". All the critics have panned it. I wouldn't even bother renting it on video.

To those who picket movies, I say: Lighten up! It's only a movie for entertainment purposes only. People take the entertainment industry wayyyy too seriously sometimes. If you find the movie offensive, then don't go see it. But don't try to take away others' right to choose to see it. Enjoy life and laugh.

If you don't want people to see a movie, the worst thing you can do is picket. This creates free advertising for the movie.
Many years ago, people were picketing "The Last Temptation of Christ". My friend and I went to see the movie to see what all the hulabaloo was about. I can't vouch for the historical or biblical accuracy of the movie but it was one of the most boring movies I had ever seen! In fact, at one point in the movie the entire theatre let out a sigh of boredom!
If no one had picketed the movie, it would have been in and out of town in less than two weeks but by picketing the movie, a lot more people went than would have.

I agree that the picketing makes it all the more difficult to restrain oneself from NOT going in to see it. (It would have made about as much sense for me to picket the Victoria's Secret fashion show! Those who didn't know about it would be glad that I had tipped them off.). I remember there was a raging furor about that "Last Temptation" movie. I never saw it, but it was some "visionary's" fantasy of what happened, and if there was even one accurate thing portrayed, I never read or heard about it.

Well, during the course of the movie, Christ does get crucified which I do believe is how the story goes. Other than that...

Wasn't the movie reinterpreted to make His temptation sexual, rather than agonizing over whether He was to go through with crucifixion? I'm sure that the cruxifixion was probably portrayed to have caused some anxiety but, all in all, I think I'm glad I didn't go see it. You know me well enough by now to realize that the other moviegoers are probably lucky I wasn't there! LOL

Shallow Hal... well, I saw a piece on it (a behind the scenes type, talking with the characters, etc) and it looked like it might be worth seeing on HBO or something which I don't pay specifically for that movie to watch. It's supposed to be about how Hal was judging women by external looks until he is hypnotized to where he will only judge women on their inner looks. So Hal starts dating someone who's not traditionally beautiful, but who is in his eyes, and he catches a lot of flak about it from his friend. They didn't give away the ending, where he's unhypnotized, and how he handles the situation he finds himself in when he learns that his girlfriend really isn't a traditional beauty, but I was left with the feeling that it would hold a good moral. Back to the old "don't judge a book by it's cover" thing.
As for picketing... what's the purpose? Are you not traditionally pretty and offended because he sees you for your inner beauty? Or are you the traditional beauty who is offended because the movie portrays you as having an inner ugliness? The movie uses fat versus thin, but really it appeared to boil down to this and I don't see where the stand is for picketing. Besides, as others said, it just leads to free advertising and makes more people want to go see it.
