I am interested in getting some reference manuals for the office and wondered what your thoughts are on what is good to have and what is not. I already have the Gregg Reference Manual on hand. That book is property of me and goes with me when I do. But I wanted to have some other reference manuals specifically for the office. I wasn't sure what would be appropriate. I want to get a Secretaries handbook for reference and I am looking at getting a pack of 2 books for about 20.00 that includes American Heritage dictionary, Third Edition, Rogets II, or a three pack for about the same price which includes Spell Check, Word Check and Style Check.
I have not used these before and wondered if any of you out there have any suggestions or recommendations. Also, if I should be buying these as reference books for the office or for myself.
Thanks.

I asked this question on OC and here is the listing of books that I created from everyone's suggestions:
Reference books

2.        The Professional Secretary's Handbook : A Complete Reference Guide by John Spencer
3.        Administrative Assistant's & Secretary's Handbook by James Stroman, et al
4.        The Professional Secretary's Handbook : Communication Skills by John Spencer
5.        The Professional Secretary's Handbook : Management Skills by John Spencer
6.        Merriam-Webster's Secretarial Handbook
7.        The Amy Vanderbilt Complete Book of Etiquette by Nancy Tuckerman, Nancy Dunnan, Amy Vanderbilt
8.        The Professional Secretaries International Complete Office Handbook, published by Random House
9.        Secretary's Portable Answer Book published by Prentice Hall
10.        Old but worthwhile, Standard Handbook for Secretaries published by McGraw Hill
11.        "I Hate Taking Minutes!", Joanna Gutmann, 1999.
12.        "The Art of Taking Minutes" by Delores Dochterman (Snyder Publising Company).

Of course the one I use constantly is my little Webster's Instant Word Guide. I bought it about ten years ago and can't live without it.
Another good handbook is the fifth edition of the Complete Secretary's Handbook by Lillian Doris & Besse May Miller, revised by Mary A. DeVries.
I would love to see a copy of a reference book from the 40's or 50's, just to see the differences.

More suggestions:
"The Professional Secretary's Book of Lists & Tips" by Mary A. De Vries
"Letitia Baldrige's New Complete Guide to Executive Manners"
by Letitia Baldrige
Between those two and my Gregg Reference Manual, that's all I need. If I can't find it in one of those, I will ask you guys!!!
To answer the second part of your question, if you office has a library to keep the books that's a good idea. How many people will be using them? If they are yours, then the other admins and support staff will be coming to you for information....ummm, there's a thought!

Sungoddess,
We do not have a library to keep these in so other admins/secretaries will be coming to me to use the books. There is only about a half dozen secretary/admin type people here to serve about 50 people, so I probably wouldn't get alot of requests for them.
You are right though, to have a few reference books and I do come here quite often for advice.
Thanks for the input. Guess I'll have to browse over to barnes and noble and see what they have, maybe a sale even, humm....
TGIF Everyone.

Oh the big red one. . . I don't have it anymore but I used to beat that thing up. Shoot, what's it called? I think it might be this one Radar mentioned
2. The Professional Secretary's Handbook : A Complete Reference Guide by John Spencer
But I'm not certain on that. It's red with large white type on the front if I remember correctly. . . and I really wish I could find it again cuz I'd buy it out of pocket! LOL I got it at a seminar somewhere. . . ages ago. . .
