Is your workload leaving you drained, stressed and in need of time off? Well you are not alone - and a new study has shown that we need a break every 62 days to avoid work-related burn out.
Stressed staff are more prone to mistakes and even put their health at risk if they wait any longer before taking time off.
The research by Post Office Travel Insurance found 23% of employees are so over-worked they “need” a holiday every few weeks.
Yet just one in five take a break every two months, while 44% work non-stop for six months.
In fact, the average worker did not have their first holiday of the year until April 19. And 6% take a break purely to use up leave.
Experts said redundancies had increased stress for staff.
Cary Cooper, a professor of Organisational Psychology and Health at Lancaster University, said: “Redundancies have led to a fall in numbers. Remaining staff work longer and harder. Workers should take a break every few months otherwise they will burn out.
“People who fail to go on holiday are more likely to be aggressive. They may struggle to sleep. Overworking depresses your immune system making it more likely you will catch a cold. And you’re more prone to mistakes.”
The study found that 52% feel “fully refreshed” after two days off, but 7% only relax in their second week while 4% “never” let go.
