The phrase Jumping The Shark is used to describe good television shows that have run out of steam. The origin of the expression lies with the 1970s show Happy Days, featuring The Fonz, the Cunningham family and their friends. Viewers in America and Britain were captivated by the show until the writing began to become tired. Viewers began to switch over and the final straw was a scene in which The Fonz (played by Henry Winkler) was waterskiing in his leather jacket and motorcycle boots and literally jumped over a shark.
