Gone For A Burton
The phrase Gone For A Burton is used to indicate that somebody has had an unfortunate mishap, or even that they’ve died. Before the World War Two, Burton's Ales ran an advert depicting a football team with a player missing, leaving a gap in the team photograph. The caption said that the player had “Gone for a Burtonâ€. The slogan was taken up by the RAF during the war who used it as slang for a missing pilot who’d crashed into the sea (i.e. the drink) and was referred to as having “gone for a Burtonâ€. Unfortunately, he’s be missing from future photographs.
