Lock, Stock And Barrel
The phrase Lock, Stock And Barrel is used to indicate something in its entirety. The phrase is of American origin – and comes from a US senator who persuaded the Senate to manufacture muskets in three parts: the lock, the stock and the barrel. This meant that the weapons could be easily transported in separate parts, preventing theft, and also that damaged guns could be rebuilt using spare parts from others. The Senate gave the go ahead and from then onwards, soldiers found they needed the “lock, stock and barrel” (i.e. everything) in order to make up a weapon.
