Sweet FA
Contrary to popular belief, Sweet FA does not stand for Sweet F*** A**. It actually stands for Sweet Fanny Adams. Poor Fanny was an eight-year-old girl from Alton in Hampshire who was found murdered, her body cut into bits and thrown into the River Wey. Around this time, the English Navy changed their rations from salted tack to tins of low-quality chopped-up sweet mutton. The new ration was very unpopular, and with dark humour sailors put forward that it was the remains of the murdered girl. They christened it “Sweet Fanny Adams”. The phrase spread on land as “sweet FA” to mean something boring or worthless – as the ration was, but not Fanny.
