OK
When something is OK, it is regarded as acceptable or good. The first known time that the expression appeared in print was in 1839 in the Boston Morning Post. It was later popularised during the 1840 election campaign of Martin Van Buren, whose nickname was “Old Kinderhook” or “OK” for short. Then, twenty years later during the American Civil War, soldiers relied on a biscuit called Orrin Kendall for rations. At the same time, a port in Haiti called Aux Cayes – which rhymes with OK – was famous among sailors for its rum, known as “OK Rum”. However, before all of this, there was a well-liked Native American chief called Old Keokuk who signed all his treaties just using his initials.
