If a task gets done in the Nick Of Time it has been done at the very last minute, just before it was too late. In team games during the Middle Ages, a tally man would keep the scores by carving a nick in a piece of wood each time a team scored. If the winning nick was added at the last minute it was known as the “nick in time”.
