If you Knuckle Down then you are concentrating and applying a lot of effort to a task. The phrase actually comes from the world of marbles! An important rule of the game is that the knuckle must be placed in the exact spot a player's previous marble had ended up. A person not concentrating, and so playing with their knuckle off the ground, would be told to put their “knuckle down”.
