If you Knock the Daylights Out of somebody then you beat them up pretty badly. In “the old days†“daylights†was slang for eyes. In bare-knuckle boxing speak, if you darkened a fighter's daylights then you’d given him a black eye, and if you’d beaten the daylights out of him you’d made his eyes so badly swollen that he could no longer see.
