If someone is Long In The Tooth they are considered to be old and wise. No one knows whether this phrase originally referred to humans or animals, such as horses. Both horses and our ancestors did not benefit from dental hygiene and so, as they aged, their gums receded, leaving the teeth appearing longer in the mouth and so the older you were the longer in the tooth you'd appear.
