Near The Knuckle and Close To The Bone
If something (usually a comment) is Near The Knuckle it's seen as on the limit of where one should go. A butcher, carving a joint of meat, will cut the flesh right down to the knuckle bone - the limit of the cut. Because of this, a comment near the knuckle is on the limit. Close To The Bone carries the same meaning.
