General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / My new venture--update

Hi all, thought I'd start a new thread since my other seems to have veered off a bit. My new venture is off and running, water testing and application completed and sent off to the state; I'm holding a "tasting party" next week and will be baking up a storm. I'd love to post my Facebook page but could an admin please let me know if that's OK? Thanks for the support everyone...chocolate chip cookies are my specialty but I have a pretty wide range of sweets and savories....and of course I test every new recipe to the chagrin of my waistline

Yes Gee and Marie, that is exactly the case with me. The division I worked for had the contract renegotiated and as a result several departments were eliminated. This was especially vexing given I had been working from home for the month prior to my leave and this was to be a permanent move. I have been trying to find another position with this same company, but it seems that it's all "who you know", and since the company is 35K employees, I haven't known the right people for those open slots!
That said, I still have all of the work-at-home company issued equipment, and have had no contact from the company on when they will be picking it up. It's just sitting collecting dust!
Thanks for the luck, wish I could send you all samples! I may ask a favor of any of you on facebook to become a fan of my page when I publish it.

Hi all, I haven't been around for several months. I visited from work, and I went on maternity leave back in October (baby boy joining his two older sisters). Then 2 weeks before I was to return, my position was eliminated. So here I am! I have been trying since January to find another position with absolutely no luck. I took advantage of the "outplacement" part of my package and was able to re-vamp my resume, but have had just two phone interviews, with nothing resulting from either. I'm getting very discouraged! Therefore, I am thinking of taking my baking hobby semi-professional for the summer and taking my wares to the local farmers markets. I am in the process of getting my kitchen licensed & inspected by the state, setting up a facebook page, and will have a tasting party for my local friends within the next month. Please wish me luck on this season's adventure and also for more of a corporate opportunity come fall!

I'm really surprised your HR department is giving the hard sell on this. As an HR rep, one of my upmost concerns is that staff never feel pressured where money is concerned. Any charitable requests were done on a passive basis....like notes in a paycheck, signs on a bulletin board, something in the newsletter or on the company's intranet. I would never condone face-to-face solicitation of any kind, including charitable giving. That's really overstepping bounds in my opinion.

Normally, I take a brisk walk during my 1/2 hour lunch and eat my actual lunch at my desk while working.
However, being 8 months pregnant--currently I drive to an empty parking lot and nap!

Our company has extensive on-line training that anyone has access to as long as manager gives the time to do so. Our annual review process includes development planning that can include the on-line training as well as other company training via webex and/or in person depending upon the office you are in. My manager also personally supports my development and I am currently taking coursework through the local university to receive a certificate in project management. This has definitely been one of the perks of being bought out by a large company.

I am in the US. My office allows flex time as long as you get in 40 hours per week. Currently I am working Tues-Fri 7:30 am to 6:00 pm with a 1/2 hour lunch. This saves me a day of commute time and gas. Prior to that change, my hours were 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with an hour lunch.

Maybe s/he does still work for the employer? With that amount of work I would certainly expect to get paid! But if it adds to your workload, it would stand to reason that said company would also be paying you..... I haven't had this with a boss, I have had it with coworkers. We were a new startup company and a similar company had just closed down operations so we had 7 staff hired in from old company (large percentage in a staff of 30). To this day, 2.5 years later, I still hear "well when we were at such-n-such company, we always did things this way". It has been a constant battle to get them to let go of the past and bring them around to a new way of doing things. Very different from your situation, of course, but I can see your struggle with past "ghosts" and trying to get boss to cut the cord. My advice would depend on the relationship you have with boss. Are you comfortable having a sit-down meeting with him/her and just putting it on the table: "I appreciate the confidence you have in me in handling all aspects of your workday; however, the demands put on me by your continuing duties from your old position are not feasible given the demands of our current employer. I will need to step away from anything to do with old company in order to focus on my current workload."

General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: How do I ask for a change in title

I agree with Jackie somewhat, depending on culture. At my (huge) company, we all have job titles that fit into the corporate structure; however, we are able to have "marketing titles" to more accurately describe what we are to both internal and external folks. As long as you have manager approval, your marketing title can be printed on business cards, used for correspondence and email signatures and anywhere else you would use a title. Again though, this depends entirely on your relationship with your manager and your corporate culture.

For those who want to mark all posts as "read", I noticed there was a button on the bottom of the main index page to mark all posts as read. One click did it for me.
Also I like this size much better for reading. I increased it in the post but this would be a better standard for most of us.
The only thing I don't particularly care for is the blank space on the side for those of us who chose not to load a picture. I'm finding it distracting, but that's just me. Other than that, I still think it's a great improvement.
