General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: How would you feel if ... RESOLUTION?

I hope things worked out for you. Last March, I was "restructured" out of a job that I held for 6 years. After 4 months of searching and temping, I found a job at a university. 11 days after I was hired, the two bosses that hired me were asked to resign, and that has left me wondering where I stand. I began night school and I'm trying to concentrate on learning as much as I can to try to stay in line with the job market. Even with computer skills, it's very tough finding permanent jobs.

I've been searching for a permanent job since mid March. I've felt that way too - but I don't think it's something "we are doing wrong" necessarily. It's finding the right match for the skills we have to offer to a company - and also, knowing someone with influence is probably a big factor. When I go to interviews, I show a portfolio with examples of work I've done in the different software programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, etc.) and it makes an impact because they can see what I can too (not just hear it) - but I still haven't landed that job yet.
I wish you much luck!

General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Week of June 7th- corporate Culture
|

I am temping as I search for a permanent position and have gotten a glimpse of several corporate cultures that really have enlightened me. I had come from a culture where "rush - I need it now" was common, and respect was not always there on a consistent basis. I made a very hard job seem easy and seamless. The admin was expected to do as told and not think. Admins were taken for granted, even when going above and beyond the call of duty. I've been interviewing with several companies and have seen and heard a lot about different companies. Companies and employees should share a common belief that they are fortunate to have each other and respect the contribution everyone makes to their common company goal.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It is unfortunate that sometimes bad management can lead to situations like this. It effects not only other employees, but also the company as a whole. If not handled properly, the company will suffer along with you, the employee. I hope things get better.

I do hope for longer assignments for sure. The shorter assignments usually do include the more mundane work. But, I try to use idle time to study and learn (relearn) things. My goal is to continuously learn - and I want to get certified in the MS products. Do you feel that helps? Currently, I show my portfolio with examples of work I've done using the MS products and that seems to be a positive in interviews.
Thanks for your advice and support.

I've been job hunting since mid March and have been temping until I can find a permanent position. It's really been tough out there - and many companies seem to use temporary help for long periods of time. I need the benefits so definitely need permanent full time. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have any advice?

General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Week of April 26th- CV/Resume--updating?
|

It is definitely important to update your resume because you never know when you'll need to have it. With the business world continuosly downsizing because of the economy and losing money, you need to find ways to keep yourself marketable. Everytime you find yourself looking for a job, many companies want to start you at the minimum hourly rate. Administrative Professionals are not always deemed "important". I worked for a company for 6 years and found myself job searching when they decided to "restructure" the position. I was Executive Assistant and Executive Sales Coordinator and supported the CEO, President, VP, Sales and Business Development. It's been over a month, and I am still searching for a permanent position. I am currently temping, but having good experiences with it. It's giving me a chance to see what's out there.

General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / What do you think?

What should I think if my boss/company doesn't recognize Administrative Professionals Week/Day? If you are an excellent employee and they say the work is great, but not even a card is given. They feel its enough just to say "good job" and then on to the next rush.
