1  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Commute Time on: March 26, 2007, 03:31:26 pm
I commute about 8 days, but since I carpool (and DH drives), I can get up 15 minutes later and do my makeup in the car .

That reminded me of a funny story from when I was growing up. There was a telemarketing company that used to just dial numbers from the phone book. We had my grandmother and my uncle living in the house with us, and they each had a listing in the phone book (they all had the same last name, so don't ask me why this was!), so we would get three phone calls in a row from the same person. After a while, my grandmother would just tell the person calling the first time that her next two calls would be unnecessary, as they were going to the same house!

Unless it's a real emergency (which has not happened at this job), I've got advance notice of when I'm going to have to stay late (usually for a reception). We generally have to have that advance notice because we're not a typical "business" setting. First, we have to have the Dean's approval if we are going to have a meeting after five. Second, we all are part of car pools, so we have to make arrangements for transportation. Third, several of us are taking classes at night. The university pays for us to attend, and we have to keep our grades up.

4  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Do you have a green office? on: March 14, 2007, 09:36:42 pm
Talk about taking the wind out of my sails right off the bat!!! I was going to say, "no, it's taupe!" [grin]

Ahem, on to the question...no, my office is not green. I wish it were, but that would require more effort than some people here are willing to put out. Since we technically don't even have paper recycling, I just throw everything into the shredder, since the shredder people recycle the stuff they pick up.

5  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Tipping on: March 14, 2007, 06:56:15 pm
Does anyone else tip delivery drivers? Specifically, I ordered pizzas for a staff lunch, and tipped the driver about 17%. Now I just got chewed out for giving the driver a tip. I was taught to always give a tip for good service, but this person said that they never tip delivery drivers. She didn't say it outright, but also implied that I should pay the tip out of my own pocket (she said that if our faculty feel like a tip is deserved, they'll pay it out of their own pocket). I told her that I had never heard of anyone not tipping the driver, and she said, "well, $10 is to much to pay someone to deliver pizza." And I told her that when I worked at another state agency (falling under the same rules that we do), we always tipped between 15 and 20 percent.

I'm a little angry about her attitude about this. I ordered and met the driver to help her out because she said she had too much stuff to do, and I did what my 8 years of experience had taught me. Am I overreacting? Have I been wrong all these years in thinking that you should tip?

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

6  General Discussion / Sound Off! / Re: Napping at work on: March 02, 2007, 04:54:35 pm
Usually, I don't need to take a nap during the day, but there are times that I'll take my lunch break and just sit in my car and doze. I set my cell phone's alarm to make sure I'm back to work on time.

I could definitely use a nap today. I got to bed on time last night, but around 1:30 AM, we had a huge thunderstorm that woke everyone up and then couldn't get back to sleep for over an hour. I think I almost would have felt more rested if I just hadn't gone to bed until after the storm was over!

CG,
I know what you mean, but on the other hand, we have a lot of people in our building that don't wash their hands very often (EEEWWWWW!). I go through tons of Clorox wipes and keep a bottle of hand sanitizer on my desk, too. And I NEVER was a germaphobe until I started working here!

8  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Please, need advice for my new cubicle setup on: January 29, 2007, 09:22:06 pm
Do you have any drawers that you can put things away in? For example, I keep my stapler, tape dispenser, etc. in my top drawer. The only things that live on top of my desk are my inbox, a few decorative items, and things that have to be plugged in (adding machine, phone, computer, etc.). If you don't have any drawers built in, you could possibly get a rolling drawer unit that would fit under the desk.

If that's not an option, you could always get some of the racks made specifically to hang on cube walls. They make 'em to hold just about anything.

Good luck,

9  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Salary Expectations on: January 29, 2007, 06:08:56 pm
No, I ended up not going for the interview. I had agreed to interview at 9:00 AM on a Monday morning, but when I emailed (all contact was through email. No phone number was given or available-which, I've come to learn, is quite common for this place!) asking for directions to the building, how to get in (the building is locked down), etc., she didn't respond until 2 days after the interview was to take place.

As it turned out, I ended up with a position in a different department at the same university. When I interviewed, I was given a very narrow salary range that the position would be hired with.

This is a public university and the ranges are required to be disclosed. And as I said in the OP, the range can be very broad. But the budgets are so tight that the actual salary that is going to be paid for any one position is narrowed down considerably. Let's just say, a supervisor in this organization already knows the maximum they'll be able to pay long before they advertise for the position (and it's nowhere near the top of the range).

As for the first position, they ended up hiring someone at just barely above federal minimum wage.

Gee,
Do you have any meetings you're working on planning? The student could shadow you in setting things up, then work on something for the meeting, like putting together meeting packets.

Well, so far, just rearranging the stuff on my desk has made a huge impact in people using my desk as a mail station. As for respect, we'll see how that is in a few weeks when I am doing their annual evaluations!

I'm going back to college! My first day back is today, and I'm excited. I just hope the professor is older than me.

Spitfire,
Can't move the desk and the plants can't go on the floor (it's right in the walkway), but you did give me an idea. I can move my computer over and use the monitor to make a "wall" on one side. That should help a little.
