General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: venting about a prima donna

Sometimes it's easier to ignore the behavior of a workplace prima donna but when their performance is over the top and work isn't getting done (and it gets dumped on you, for instance), then it's perfectly okay to address the situation in the interests of being professional. In my previous job, I had to step lightly around co-workers who were hired because they were the director's very best friends, and a completely different set of rules or standards applied to them despite having (on paper anyway) the same salary job title and classification level. In that situation I felt it safer to just let it go due to the numbers being against me. Happy to report that my current job doesn't appear to have any serious prima donna population, so it's such a relief having seen both arenas.

Our building has been undergoing complete replacement of infrastructure wiring this past couple of months. We've had to work through intermittent, painfully loud jackhammering and what the rebuilders call "core drilling" through 12" of concrete in the ceilings and floors. It was absolutely deafening but we were given the option of taking our vacation time although I feel it should have been paid leave since it's a state office, and we were captive audiences! Mercifully they're done in our corner of the building but it was really awful, plus you were made to feel like kind of a wimp for actually taking the time off to avoid noise damage! I left whenever I could because I'd like to retain what hearing abilities I still have. It seems to be left up to the boss in each area to determine how to handle the noise situation here, but that's somewhat normal for these parts. Good luck to you.

Another aspect of office technology is when software features are used infrequently, as in my work environment. It can be months before a certain thing needs to be done but when the need arises, it's almost always a time crunch. That's when I usually when I have to hurry and assist or walk someone through something, like mail merge or spreadsheet formulas, charting, etc. So if it's a technique that isn't used every day and there's familiarity, it can be scary to the user I guess.
Just another "two cents" worth. --Nancy

Jackie and Pam, Thanks for such a cordial welcome! Will definitely plan to join in and not just lurk from now on. I've gotten so much out of the forum and can't let a day pass without seeing what's new. Software Survival alone has helped me greatly with Excel and Acrobat--there's just nothing like real-world power users. --Nancy (nifty50)

There's always someone in the workplace who, for whatever reason, just can't learn how to do things even with the ease in using templates. I personally think it's a way to delegate and maintain the upper hand when they just can't (or won't) figure out formatting and template functions. Or if you *do* walk them through it and hold their hands, nine times out of ten, they'll come back the next time and have to be instructed to such lengths that you nearly give up and just say, "Oh I'll do it" and usually that's just easier in the long run anyway!
Anyway, hope your Monday goes along better. I've been a Admin Authority visitor for many months and have been meaning to join in the forum. What a wonderful resource this all is!
