2  General Discussion / The Humour Zone / Why Computers Sometimes Crash on: August 20, 2002, 02:14:10 am
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort,
and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash,
and the double clicking icon puts your window in the trash;
and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash,
then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house
says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol,
that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall,
and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse;
then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang,
cuz as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk,
and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk,
then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM.
Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

3  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Agencies on: August 01, 2002, 10:59:58 pm
Agencies have a high turnover, given that agents work on commission.  After an assignment, it's not surprising to see new staff when checking in again.

Some tend to have their favorites, usually those that can be rented out for a lower pay because that's the "maximum a client can pay" -- lowering a temp's cut increases theirs.

It's usually best to register with every agency out there.  Once you accept an assignment and have your foot in the door at a few firms, you can network to see what else they have to offer.

With those new friends it'll be easier to be in the loop of job openings, rather than rely on commissioned salespeople.  Not all agents will say you are available, even when you are, so you might be contacted by the client before the agent has a chance to line up one of their other favorites.

Taking the lower paying job for the sake of personal happiness worked out for me.  Glad to hear it will be the path you'll be taking as well.

This person may have been a boss I had in the past, if they worked in the same fashion.  ::shudder::

Had to read this more than once.  I couldn't finish it the first time without laughing loudly at my desk.

May be good to also report skills not to expect from less qualified applicants, so they are fully aware and would not have reason to complain later.

One more thing is that those who do the stories are known to disregard HOW things are said.

When there are words used, especially those that evoke more drama (even when obviously used in another intention), many "journalists" tend to stick with what was technically said versus what was obviously communicated in the conversation.

A couple of years ago, I was misquoted by a fast talking "journalist" who seemed disinterested in the overall facts of a subject and more interested in why this and why that on a small part that interested her.  After it was published, the only information printed turned out to be misleading and inaccurate because of partial reporting.  Although it was arguably correct, the final mix was disappointingly incomplete.

Therefore, I am sure there is more to it, if this publication will give space for rebuttals by all involved, including the one interviewed.

It seems the article attempts to focus on the topic of workplace anxiety caused by insufficient training for those that are ordered to perform tasks unfamiliar and outside their usual job description (which itself varies, as there are many levels of PA professionals).

The wording of the article surely could have been more balanced with respect to conveying a neutral position as the topic could also relate to other professionals that may deal with low morale in the same situation.

Hopefully, readers can see through the rhetoric and a correction will be printed to clarify his intentions.

You can do plenty of volunteer work through the computer for the community or organizations supporting office professionals.  Having an office at your disposal would be ideal, as non-profit groups (near and far) could always use extra help.

I sometimes get free clip art from http://www.Ditto.com.  You can do a search based on keywords, then receive pages of possibilities from the websites out there.

A few years back, I purchased from the local Radio Shack a connection device where the phone line plugged into it then it plugged into the phone.   It has an outlet that can plug into to a recorder, as a microphone would connect to it.

It's similar to an in / out coupler that lengthens a phone line using multiple cords.
