1  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / How would you handle.... on: October 12, 2004, 02:23:59 pm
How do you handle interviewing outside the company?

I am currently working for a company that is in dire financial trouble. It is well known by everyone inside and outside the company. Paycuts, benefit cuts and layoffs were announced a few weeks back. My biggest issue is that my husband works here as well. He has 17 years, I have less than 5. With the pay and benefit cuts, we are looking at around a 30% cut in our household income.

With that said, I am actively seeking other employment. So what do I tell my current boss, who by the way is looking for employment as well - but I'm not suppose to know. I have had several drs appts lately, not interviews, but I know he thinks they are interviews.

With the state of the company and all that is going on, is it appropriate or right or whatever to level with him so he knows what is going on? I'm not really worried about getting laid off, I'm worried about the huge income cuts for my family. I don't know what to do. I don't want him to distrust me. As long as I am employed here, I will maintain the same level of professionalism. But I also don't want him to think I've got some kind of terminal illness with all the sudden unexplained absences.

Guidance, PLEASE!!! Thanks

Good morning all and TGIF!!

I have a question on online computer training. I'm looking for some online computer training and certification. Does anyone know of any good online training companies? I think this was discussed several months ago, but I can't remember.

Thanks.

3  General Discussion / The Humour Zone / Choosing a New Bathing Suit on: March 13, 2001, 10:53:08 am
(This is hilarious!! Apparently this is a true e-mail a woman wrote to her friend after shopping for a bathing suit.  Who knows?  A friend forwarded it to me.)

I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and

humiliation known as buying a bathing suit.  When I was a child in the

1950's, the bathing suit for a woman with a mature figure was designed for a woman with a mature figure - boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered.  They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a good job.

Today's stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure carved from a potato chip.  The mature woman has a choice - she can either front up at the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney's Fantasia - or she can wander around every run-of-the-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands.

What choice did I have?  I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room.  The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks. The reason for this is that any shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash.

I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place, I gasped in horror - my bosom had disappeared!  Eventually, I found one bosom cowering under my left armpit.  It took a while to find the other.

At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib.  The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups.  The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed hump. I realigned my speed hump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment.  The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately, it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it.  The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom, and sides.  I looked like a lump of playdough wearing undersized cling wrap.  As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped head through the curtains, "Oh There you are!" she said, admiring the bathing suit...I replied that I wasn't so sure and asked what else she had to show me.  I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two piece which gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a serviette ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with ragged frill and came out looking like Tarzan's Jane pregnant with triplets and having a rough day.  I tried on a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them.

Finally, I found a suit that fit...a two piece affair with shorts

style bottom and a loose blouse-type top.  It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge friendly, so I bought it.

When I got home, I read the label which said "Material may become

transparent in water."   I'm determined to wear it anyway.....I'll just have to learn to do the breaststroke in the sand.

   And, summer is sooooo close!!!

I work for a major airline. All I can say is yesterday was a very trying, scary, emotional day. The unknown is terribly frightening and as you can imagine we had lots of unknown yesterday. Was that one of our our planes? Were all of our aircraft accounted for? Was our ticket agents in the WTC alive, hurt, what? I am happy to report that all of our aircraft and employees are alive and accounted for.

Today marks many many changes for the airline industry as well as our country. Now is the time for us as Americans to stand together and tell the world that we WILL NOT stand by and allow this type of tragedy on our soil. We will hunt down and punish those responsible for this act of terrorism.

Congratulations to everyone who passed the CPS exam! I have been lurking here for awhile and finally decided to post.

I sat for the exam in 1995. I concentrated my efforts on the 1st 2 parts of the exam. I briefly reviewed the management section, but resigned myself to the fact that I would not pass it. Much to my surprise, I passed all three parts on the 1st try.

I purchased the 3 book series and workbooks to use in a review class my IAAP chapter sponsored. The books were very useful in reviewing the topics. The support and friendship I gained while attending the review class can never be replaced.

If you are considering taking the exam, you may want to check with your local IAAP chapters to see if they offer review classes.

I must admit that if the situation were different I would believe hanky panky also. HOWEVER, he is not into women. But, previous assistant does not believe this.

I'm thinking that a short meeting to go over my performance to date is a good start. I really enjoy my job and like my boss. So, today while he is out of the office, I think I'll gather some thoughts and sit down with him when we return on Tuesday.

Thanks again for all the help! Its nice to know we have someplace to vent and gather valuable advice.

While I've been lurking for a while, I've never really posted anything. However, something has really been bugging me today.

I started a new position in my company in early January. The previous admin accepted a promotion and has moved on to another department. When I first started, she called me every day for the first couple of weeks. I thought this was great! She was really trying to be helpful and there was about a 3 week gap in the time that she left and the time I was allowed to change departments.

Well, she kept herself on his email and calendar so she could help me. I thought this was a big help also because of her experience in this department and with him. She was with him for about 2 years and made several moves with him.

Yesterday I was out sick. So boss emailed previous assistant for some info. While this normally wouldn't have been a problem, the email she replied with was. It went something to the affect of

I work in the airline industry, so our major benefit is of course the flying priviledges. But we do have many other benefits including a great health/dental plan (very very reasonable for families), vision and daycare reimbursement accounts, tuition reimbursement. Our company has also set up a website to list discounts that are available including attraction and concert tickets, cellphone service, drycleaning. You name it, we get a discount on it. We also get other travel discounts like hotels and car rentals. There are also other perks like adoption reimbursements, another website to help us find help or whatever we need, buddy passes for our friends. I'm finding new things all the time!

And now that they have made great strides in the administrative pay area, this truly is a great place to work.
10  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: How Many Sick and Personal Days Do You Get Off? on: July 12, 2001, 03:06:46 pm
We get 2 weeks vacation after 1 year, 3 weeks after 5 years, 4 weeks after 10 years, 5 weeks after 17 years, and 6 weeks after 25 years.

As far as sick leave, we get 1 week after 6 months, 2 weeks during the 2nd year, 3 weeks during the 3rd year, etc. From 10-20 years, we get 10 weeks. From 21 years on, 11 weeks.

We get 10 holidays and 1 personal holiday. We get 3 days for breavement.

The best part is that my boss is very understanding.
11  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: To Tip or Not To Tip........ on: July 27, 2001, 02:46:58 pm
I worked in the Sales Dept of a hotel in my previous life. Whenever the sales reps had clients in for lunch, they would simply sign the bill and add the tip to it. The full amount of the meal plus tip was then charged back to our dept. The clients were never expected to tip for these business meals.

Ok, I think this Forum is bad luck! I just got finished reading this post about the copier. I decided to do one last thing before packing up.

Guess what? You guessed right! Copier jammed, 2 jobs waiting. I almost burned my hand off trying to get out the little shreds of paper left by the last operator.

Where was that Conga line? I'm joining it now and getting out of here for the day.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!!!
13  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Boredom on: August 09, 2001, 09:14:34 am
I have the exact same problem. I can never find enough work to do. I usually sit here all day and surf the internet. What little I do have can be done in 30 minutes to an hour.

Part of the problem here is that we rely on temps to do work. They would rather pay temps to do work a full-time employee can do.

I've approached one of my managers about the situation. I have a meeting scheduled with my direct manager on Monday to discuss my performance. I'm hoping I can make him see and understand that I need/want more work. Apparently his previous admin was content to sit here and look busy. Not me. I need work. I tend to get in trouble when I'm not busy.
14  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Thank you letters on: October 11, 2001, 06:46:00 am
I had a job interview on Tuesday afternoon. Would it be appropriate to send my thank you letter via email? The decision will be made fairly quickly and I want to make sure all 3 people I saw on Tuesday get my thank you BEFORE a decision is made.

When I interviewed within my own company, I sent my thank yous via email.

Thoughts?
