Yankee, you rock!  I wanted to respond to this and just wasn't sure what to say.  You hit the nail on the head.

I, too, enjoy urban legends and netlore, and will check out David Emery as soon as I have another free moment (besides this one?  maybe next year!).  Thanks for the tip!

Losing my mind, still at work at 6pm in NJ, hopin' nobody steals my kidney...

2  General Discussion / Topical Climates / Re:executions on: April 11, 2001, 10:18:42 am
One thing that bears mentioning is that Timothy McVeigh himself is in favor of having his execution televised.

I think that a televised execution made available to the American public, by pay-per-view, webcast or network broadcast, painful or not, will only serve to make an unconscionably evil person into a martyr among the fringe element of society that he once belonged to (militia groups and fanatics), and will only serve to further belittle the value of human life in our society.

What makes us human is our ability to reason and make moral choices.  Televised violence (and yes, that does include "painless" death) only serves to desensitize all of us, especially children and adolescents, to death and killing, and will serve no good whatsoever.

Just my humble opinion,

Has anyone had experience (good or bad) with long distance, data or voice services from Global Crossing?  If so, would love to hear from you.  (If you have negative comments that you don't wish to post here, please e-mail me at trishsbn@ivillage.com.)

Thanks!

You can also search the Zagat guide, at www.zagat.com, by location.

Take Our Daughters To Work Day is sponsored by the Ms. Foundation for Women.  Info and ideas can be found at the site above (sorry, I tried to make a link but I'm in a hurry!).

When I get sleepy at work, I usually throw on a good CD, and make a strong cup of ginger tea, which is very spicy, caffeine free and will definitely wake you up.

Try going outside for a few minutes, or doing some stretches at your desk.  IVillage.com has a link to Keyboard Yoga, which is kinda fun and will get your circulation going again.

When all else fails, I think I like Robbie's idea.  I could probably use a good self-inflicted slap in the face once in a while!

7  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Typing speed on: February 02, 2001, 10:51:01 am
Wow!  I failed typing in ninth grade also.  Our classroom was the last in the school to still have manual typewriters, and my pinky fingers were so tiny and weak that I just couldn't type that way.

The last time my typing speed was checked, I was around 90wpm, but I just don't type as much as I used to (and I still don't use my pinkies!).

Yankee, you are a modicum of restraint and decorum.  I probably would have told the interrupter to go pee on a power line.  Just sending my admiration - you handled it wonderfully and I'm certain your pres. took notice of your incredibly professional behavior!

Congratulations!  I work from home on occasion, and it's so nice not to have to do the whole driving to work thing once in a while (plus it's kinda fun to do conference calls in your pajamas).

I find that I'm always looking for silly things, like binder clips and rubber bands.  Make yourself a  little care package of office supplies to take home with you.

Enjoy!

DonnaP, it's not that bad!

As someone who can't find her desk on a regular basis, I know how overwhelming it can be to look at the mountain of paper and say "I must do ALL of this, TODAY".

Take a deep breath and dive in, because it probably won't take you more than an hour to get it all organized and prioritized.

I use a folder system, Pay bills, Do now, Read Later, etc. and have folders for my boss as well.  Once it's all prioritized and put away, I become so much more productive.

Then, just remember it's Friday, do as much as you can, and know the rest will be organized and ready to go when you get back to it.

Have a great weekend!

In my opinion, the faster you find a better position where you will be treated with respect, the better off you will be. This guy sounds really fishy, and is exactly the type that will be all over you about your lifestyle, religion, or anything else he can harass you for given half the opportunity.

It's interesting to me that such a creep would advertise himself as a "good Christian".  He sounds like a sexist, racist jerk to me.

Best of luck to you, and DO let us know what happens!

Hooray!  Radar, that website was exactly what I needed!  Thanks to both of you for your quick responses...and it appears that the hotel is very nice, not the Bates Motel at all. What a relief!

Thanks again,

13  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Has anyone been to Beloiel, Quebec, Canada? on: March 29, 2001, 02:29:55 pm
It's apparently 20 miles outside Montreal...looking for info on the Hotel Rive-Gauche or anything about the area.  Have been searching the web forever and can't find much. Is anyone familiar with this area?  I've tried all the major search engines and travel web sites with minimal results (so far I know that the hotel exists and has 22 rooms, which could mean really nice inn or Bates Motel, its address, and the fact that there is a river nearby, but that's about all).

Any info about the area would be appreciated!

14  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / I do this all the time... on: March 30, 2001, 03:25:09 pm
and I kinda feel like a "movie secretary" myself!  I usually just say something like, "This is Kitchen Witch from XYZ, I have Ms. Evilbeast on the line for you, can you hold while I transfer you?".

Sometimes I have the strangest desire to say all of this with a mysterious accent, but I usually control myself...

Have a great weekend, everyone!

15  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Performance Reviews on: April 05, 2001, 02:02:25 pm
I guess I'll be the only one to say this, but I find my annual review really useful and informative. After working for the same person for several years, I pretty much know what's expected of me all the time, and we tend to go through our days just doing and not talking about stuff like goals, expectations, etc. Also, instead of negative feedback, my boss will suggest things she'd like to see me concentrate my energies on.  I suppose it all depends on your relationship with bossie, though, and we have a pretty open line of communication.

As far as increase expectations, Ozbound, you might consider approaching your boss a week or two before your review, since usually they've decided on a number before you sit down for the actual review.  And you should never be afraid to ask for a little more - everyone else is doing it (at least in my office), and usually getting a little something for their efforts, so why shouldn't you?
